Cooper was a heck of a fighter, just a tad below the top grade before the drugs ruined him. I remember when he came up, touted as Joe Frazier's protege.

The expectations for him were to be a top level HW, but he was just a little too small to be a top contender, particularly in the 90s. That and the drugs pretty much assured him journeyman status - but what an exciting journeyman he was. He pretty much quit against Foreman, but usually gave a solid effort, and entertained.

Here's a good article on Cooper and his career:

I've always had loads of time and respect for Bert. One of my favourite heavies.

Looked to me like the Foreman fight was fixed.

Love the guy.

You don't have to be the best or have a big mouth to be an exciting HW.

Bert Cooper was one of my favorite fighters to watch. His bouts against Mercer, Holyfield, Tillman and Moorer were all classics. I think he did have a lot of potential especially early in his career and as a cruiserweight. Its a shame he got into drugs as drugs are always an effective way to kill you're career. Still on certain nights Cooper showed that he was one bad dude giving Mercer, Moorer and Holyfield hell. Cooper may never have been one of the very best heavyweights in the world but when motivated he was always a good challenger and could destroy many legit professional fighters much like would he did to Wille Dewitt.
