Default I think Sergio is retired

He was gunning hard for the Mayweather fight and it didn't happen. Now he's been inactive for 7 months at 38 years old, with no fight lined up.

His last fight was in Argentina against a relative step down, and it was a lot closer than it should've been. He got his mega fight in Chavez Jr. and it looks like he's going to ride off into the sunset.

I would be VERY surprised if he stepped up to GGG. He can't really fight anyone else either as the public outcry to fight Golovkin would be too much for his ego to handle. I think he's done. Either way, very good fighter, very good career.

If the money is there I think a GGG fight may still be an option. If not, than retirement may be the appropriate route.

Stop talking absoloute shit...

He was inactive after the Chavez Jr fight due to injury, he had 'step down' fight as you call it against a top 5 undefeated contender in his first fight back after injury, he subsequently got injured again in that fight, he is currently re-habbing until next year where he'll return most likeley against Cotto before moving on to GGG.

Shit you're right.

He's gonna fight Cotto in a battle that I don't care about at all.

Two shot fighters looking for a payday always upsets me, makes me feel for the young guys looking for money/exposure.

He should push hard for a PBF fight or retire

If he's not retired, he should do it already, Chavez Jr ruined him

nothing left for the old man aside from probably more humilliating defeats against handpicked opponents like in his last fight, or a brutal KO loss against GGG

He didn't achieve stardom until late into his career and even his big paydays are closer to Berto paychecks than anything you'd think he deserves.

While I would hope he retires, and I usually am in favor of fighters retiring much sooner than even a tad too late, I can understand Sergio fighting on even when he is close to 40 and been injured of late.

His legacy also is on the line. More or meaningful victories would elevate his HOF candidacy greatly, a debated subject, and he's getting to the point where he will have his own little era of MW supremacy in the history books so that too would be enticing for me if I were him.

I'd go for money fights immediately. Plan to fight 3 more fights and willing to retire after the first L.

I like Martinez, he's a nice guy.

But he desperately, and I do mean desperately sought out smaller fighters like Mayweather and Cotto, even Manny Pacquiao. And the guy is a full blown middleweight now.

If he was able to make 154 where's the problem on fighting 154 beltholders?

Anyway he still has 2 remaining fights signed with HBO and will try to cash out. His best money options are at 154: Canelo, Cotto and Floyd. But I will never overlook a boxer's EGO, so the GGG fight is not impossible...
