I remember when Kovalev became Hopkins' mandatory. Hopkins refused to fight him, so Kovalev went to Cleverly's home town and knocked him out for the title rather than wait forever...........

I think that was Jenna Jay doing the interview. She used to do a show on ESB with that drunk Rumsfeld. She used to make some really stupid claims about guys like Tarver and Hopkins being able to give Wlad a competitive fight.

No reason for BHOP to harvest him yet.

He was still just unripe fruit on a tree.

Pick fruit once it ripens. Leave the immature stuff on the vine.

An old rotting geezer like you should understand that.

He was the number one contender, how could he have lost the opportunity to fight for the title? If Hopkins recused the fight he would have been stripped. If a number one contender doesn't go after the recognized titlist, its a duck plain and simple. And I'm saying that thinking Sergay could have beaten him.

Kovalev became Hopkin's mandatory once Murat began to have visa issues, but when they were resolved, Kova was left out in the cold, so he went to Wales to KO Cleverly

Not quite as simple as that - the Cleverly fight was already arranged (in fact F W and Clev ended up embarassed at the announcment presser when final confirmation didn't come through from Duva as she scrambled to see if the Hopkins fight - Kovalevs preference - could be made) and just waiting for Kov to beat White for finalising.

When it became apparent that the Hopkins fight was not gonna be easy to make if it happened at all (suggestion was Hopkins might vacate to fight Cleverly himself) it made most sense to take the title fight that was already lined up, rather than the one which might never happen (potentially Kovalev coulda ended up fighting Murat himself for the vacant title - which woulda been worse than Clev).

With no-one willing to broadcast Hopkins vs Kovalev the Clev vs Hopkins scenario was actually quite plausible (coulda been on SHO or in the UK) and at the time there was certainly some mention that GBP/ Hopkins had made an approach to F W.
