Default UK Neuro Surgen 1995: "I see no reason why McLellan shouldn't make a full recovery".

Back in May 1995, three months after the Benn/McLellan fight, British Neuro Surgen John Sutcliffe who was treating McLellan said; "I see no reason why he shouldn't make a full recovery".

Complications only started when McLellan was flown on a medical airbus to the US at the request of McLellan's family.

Had his family not been so eager to fly him back home, the G-Man could well have been in good health.

That 'fight of their lives' documentary was great, heartbreaking but great. Did they advise against Mclellan flying home at the time?

Thanks for the knowledge, God forbid it happens to us or anyone we know, extra caution will be taken.

However, I don't feel this is worth a discussion as all that will come out of it is 'AHHH DAMN, IF ONLY THIS, IF ONLY THAT'.

This is how fate had turned out. You can't blame ignorance of this kind on anybody.

I think so but I'm not sure - it certainly came across that way in the documentary and also the way Buncey is talking about it.

Nigel Benn went through hell after what happened to McLellan and it transpires that McLellan was on the mend before he was flown home.

It's fair to say that in some cases the medical profession get things wrong, but I would suggest that no-one should ever go against the wishes of a brain surgeon.

i've heard theories that the actual brain damage came from the 2 fights he had with julian jackson (obviously G man won but jackson got some hard hits in), benn was just the guy the "pop" it.

They were both huge punchers, probably a combination of both, look at all the big punchers Ali fought also.

tarick salmaci, a good kronk welter and got into one of the contender series though shopworn and injury hampered. but says the stuff below....

Quote:
"I feel Gerald McClellan was already injured going into the Nigel Benn fight, I have a strong belief. There as this one time Gerald and I were sparring and I hit him with a solid jab in the middle of his forehead, like between the eyebrows...He told me "STOP, HOLD UP"! YOU THUMBED ME MAN. So he stopped and started blinking non stop from what I thought was a thumb. I never even felt like I thumbed him, and they were thumbless gloves so I just figured somehow my thumb must have poked him in the eye because of the way he was blinking really fast and non-stop..with both eyes though.

So we finish our sparring session, and we are in the back locker room at Kronk, this is like 1994, Gerald walks up to me and says, "Man, I'm gonna be honest with you...You didn't thumb me...You hurt me". "I'm man enough to say that". I was then kind of confused and surprised as to how I could of hurt him with a jab and I was fighting at 147lbs. and he was weighing probably 175 lbs....
pretty disturbing

It's all true - even Duncey said it on radio.

Nigel Benn didn't damage Gerald McClellan; the McClellan family damaged Gerald McClellan.

It was probably down to Lisa McClellan, as she's the most angry and screwed up one.

It does sound like a case of, ENGLAND SUCKS the doctors don't know what they are doing lets get him back to good ol USA.
It's that age old stereotype Americans have about England when the truth is we probably have amongst the best doctors in the world.
And don't get me started on food our food is leaps and bounds better than the trash you all eat.

A grave grave sad mistake.

Maybe saving cost perhaps, in exchange for the priceless chance of Gerald making a recovery.

I think the truth of the matter is that there is more we don't know about the human brain than what we do know. Roughly 100 billion cells in complex arrangements that we can't even guess about.
