A couple factors that I would say favour Cotto in this bout.

  • Canelo seems to box in bursts (at his own pace) - up against a Cotto, I would say this suits Cotto. Pacquiao fought in bursts against Cotto, but it was the elite speed and the punches he didn't see that troubled him.
  • Cotto seems to be coping with pressure much better recently, doesn't lose his head, the main reason being that his defense is much improved.
  • The jab like you said will not only set everything up, but it will disrupt Canelo's attacks. From the outside, you can see when Canelo is going to attack. Throw that jab as Canelo initiates the attack and it should force him to reset. Something I haven't seen happen to him yet.
  • Cotto's brother nearly knocked him out
