what is it with Calzaghe and Conn getting mentioned n threads now

i think conn would have a bit too much for calzaghe and out box him and if he did trade in the later rounds he would be fine as calzaghe isnt the biggest puncher

I really find this underestimation of Calzaghe hilarious but I forgot that on this forum, the older the better. I am sure Jem Mace could have licked them both in a single night.

It would be a close fight but I pick Calzaghe. More speed, better pop in his punches (even RJJ admitted Calzaghe hit hard, much harder than he imagined), and Calzaghe simply has not learned to lose.

That said, Conn beat a lot of very good/great fighters, was durable, quick and in his own way tenacious. I give him a ton of respect. Though, as I argued before, I think the accolades he gets for the first Louis fight are more an apology for Louis fetishists than a true estimation of his accomplishments that night, though that may be a different topic.

Calzaghe is better than Conn. He throws more punches, hits harder, is harder to hit cleanly with a power punch, has better ring generalship, and is bigger.

Someone needs to tell me why Conn lost as many fights as he did.

This would actually be a great matchup.....Conn and Joe fought similarly as they both would take risks and had good stamina and chins....The only factors i see coming into play are: Joe is faster, his workrate is a lot better, and they i think would be the deciding factors......

Well we lost something like 7 of his first 15. Sounds like he was over-matched.

He lost a desperately close one to Young Corbett after sustaining a bad cut from a headbutt, before avenging the loss in earnest, with a wide decision.

He lost to Kreiger but beat him decisevly in a rematch.

He lost to Teddy Yarosz but he beat him over a longer distance.

Then he lost two to Joe Louis (no shame there).

So a very busy schedule at the highest level saw him beaten for around 1/2 in his first 18 or so fights. After that, the ONLY man to beat him unavenged was the Brown Bomber - and Conn kicked off at Welter, I think.

So now boxing fans who consider Louis an ATG are "Louis fetishists". This kind of talk would never have been permitted in the old days, dag nabbit.

Hah!

I am playing a bit of Devil's Advocate here, also.

I do think Calzaghe is under-rated by the "dagnabbit" crowd and that Conn is more remembered for the fight he almost won than the rather amazing list of fighters he beat.

Joe does many things well BUT hit hard isnt 1 of them, neither is defense. Since when is Joe at 5'11 bigger than 6'1 Conn?

CONN LOST TWICE TO LOUIS PLUS HE LOST 8 OF HIS 15 AS A TEENAGER

Calzaghe's punches are more effective that the casual observer would believe. RJJ's first comment was that Joe hit much harder than he thought. Similar statements were delivered by Kessler, Reid and Eubank. Apparently Joe sits down on those supposed slaps. Lacy's face attested to such.
