Default Jhonny Gonzalez: Mr Close but no cigar

I give Jhonny Gonzalez props. He came close in two recent losses but this is boxing and anything can happen. Nevertheless it is right to highlight his recent opposition. It is a clear reflection of what kind of fighter he is and aspires to be.

Gerry Penalosa
Irene Pacheco
Israel Vazquez
Fernando Montiel
Mark Johnson
Ratanachai Sor Vorapin

6 champions in 6 championship fights.

He is willing to fight anybody - he's a throwback. Too bad he's fallen short in 2 of his last 3 fights

It must be noted that in between his two losses he got a great win in Irene.

Felt bad for him, he was easily beating Penalosa until he got hit with that liver shot.

He was dominating Penalosa until the KO as well, he's a really good fighter who fights often, he's not elite, but he's very good.

Losing to Vasquez is not a bad loss, and he'll recover from this lose as well.

Dude was a champ, who defended multiple times. He'll be back soon, and he beat Montiel, whom I hate, so he's A-OK in my book.

He was boxing class before the body shot landed, I was impressed up until that point. He'll be back, at least he fights anybody and isn't afraid to mix it up at times.

I felt bad for him, he was dominating Penalosa and worked hard to do so for likr 7 rounds.

I also felt sorry for Gonzalez , he's a fine boxer and certainly isn't afraid to be matched with anyone .

He'll come again but you can't help but feel his vulnerability will always let him down at the highest level .

Except for rd. 1, it was a shutout...

Indeed, anything can happen in boxing. Especially when you're up against a wily and talented veteran like GP.

He's proven pretty durable in the past, I believe this was just a freak occurance. It's not like Gonzalez was ever especially vulnerable, he's defeated some good opponents.

He's not especially vulnerable but as I said at the highest level(Vasquez , Marquez etc) I can see guys being able to grind down Gonzalez when things get tough .

It looks like Gonzalez may be permanently up at Super Bantamweight too where things are much tougher . Gonzalez isn't chinny , and he's not got a weak liver either but at the same time at the highest level guys will be able to take what he gives and wear him down .

JGonz was a lanky and big fighter for a bantam. He has admitted to literally killing himself just to make weight. He has to move up soon. Unfortunately for him, jr. feather is loaded with the likes of Izzy, Rafa, DPDL, Cabballero, Molitor...

IMO Molitor is the only fighter that he has a chance to beat, but even that would be very tough for him...

Same thing happened against Vasquez.

It's so frustrating to be a fan of the guy. He's an amazing boxer with freaky power but everytime he steps up, his chin spoil his performance.
