Default 20 Worst Heavyweight Champions of the 20th Century

I just found this old list I had found on-line and printed out about 7 or 8 years ago. The URL it came from is long gone now, which is a shame because there was a quick analysis that went along with each pick, but here is the list itself. Keep in mind, it only covers up to the year 2000 (so don't go asking me where John Ruiz is!! ).

1) Damiani
2) Morrisson
3) Bentt
4) Leon Spinks
5) Carnera
6) Marvin Hart
7) Seldon
Braddock
9) Dokes
10) McCall
11) Coetzee
12) Bruno
13) Douglas
14) Herbie Hide
15) Shannon Briggs
16) John Tate
17) Jess Willard
1 Mike Weaver
19) Ernie Terrell
20) Greg Page

What do you guys think? Personally, I think spots on here could be made for Moorer, Bonecrusher, Berbick, or Pinklon Thomas. Maybe Michael Spinks could be knocking on the door of this list as well?

Ruiz was a fraud and a cheater. Only reason he ever moved up in the rankings was because of Don King. His connections with King allowed him to repeatedly violate the rules against excessive holding, and even worse, get away with blatantly faking "low blows" to get crucial point deductions and shamefully "win" fights. Ruiz is worse than any of those guys, because he used chicanery to attain a status in boxing his extremely limited abilities would never have allowed him to attain.

Give Willard some credit... hardly stylish, or the most talented... he did, however take the title from Johnson, was the legitimate No.1 contender via the 'white hope' avenue, and copped the most horrendous belting via the rock fists of Dempsey, before finally relinquishing on his stool..

His heart is in the top ten, when reflecting on the courage he showed in those 3 rounds. The chance of Jess reigning for another 5 years, had Dempsey not appeared, is very likely. Regardless, give the man some credit.

well i dont know if morrison would be the 2nd worst heavyweight of the 20th century, he was a good exiting contender at his best who did very well against foreman, ruddock and a old pinklon thomas as well as turning back a tought contender in joe hipp.

if anything he had a world class left hook

Thinking it over now, I think Greg Page should be higher on this list. He only won one notable fight that I can remember, vs. Coetzee, and even that was tainted because of all the controversy of the last round being an extra minute. Other than that, it seemed he lost to everyone under the sun.

IMO Braddock doesn't deserve to be on that list. Maybe in "20 worst Championship Reigns", but he was not a bad champion. Came to fight, good skill level... even if he was undersized and outclassed against Louis, so is EVERY heavyweight with the possible exception of the top 10-20...

Braddock won the undisputed heavyweight championship (putting him above many "champions" right off the bat) with a legitimate win (he hurdles a few more more) over a legitimate champion (easily better than 20 by now).

Unless they're solely basing his ranking off the fact that he sat on the belt for two years and then lost it on his first defense...

Agree with both your points above.

The early champs invariably had much more claim to the title World Champion as there was only one (and later only two) of them at any given time. These days everybody's got a bloody belt around their waste!

I would move Bruno down the list. Not the best heavyweight, but he was a pretty solid boxer. Just one of those guys that falls short of being elite.

Liston should be on that list too.

Now that will wind some die harders up.

Anyway his championship run is pretty pathetic with a glorified two win streak at a glass chinned lthwt and a fallimg apart "no mas" against a feather puncher in the next................
