Default Boxer's personalities - do we really care that much?

I'm personally getting tired of seeing posts regarding which boxers' personalities are more or less acceptable to the general public. A boxer with a personality! Do we really care that much?

I long for a return to the days when two bad assed well matched pugilists regulalrly got into the ring and let boxing do the talking. Competitive boxing fights are all that's needed to promote boxing and place the names of fighters firmly into the consciousness of the general public. Competitive and dynamic fights nurture personalities that will generate public interest for wrong and right reasons.

A good friend of mine (who is no longer interested in boxing) sums up nicely:

I can remember the days when boxing was part of the normal day to day work banter and everybody could reel off several fighter's names if asked; today no one talks about boxing and no one knows who are the main fighters in boxing - that's the problem right there!

Nuff Said!!

Trash talk used to be fun, but it is all the same to me now.

I have been following the sport for a decent period of time however, so the trash is still necessary to attract new fans.

More people at least need to back up the trash talk. Like when Ali was predicting rounds. Not just both guys going, "I'm gonna knock'em out." When it goes to a boring decision, it's a pathetic joke.

When exactly was this day? Jack Johnson talked trash. Jim Corbett talked trash. At least one champion from each era in between talked trash. Other fighters that didn't talk trash had huge public personas. You're waxing nostalgic for an era that never existed.

i really don't give a damn as long as they do what they are paid to, and give the public action for the money.

don't care if they are educated or thugs, black or white. personality or color doesn't mean a shit in this sport

I love those old 1950s pre-fight training camp interviews...the boxer would be sat on the ring apron, flanked by his trainer and manager and just say "I'm in great shape and looking forward to the fight"...EVERY FOOKIN' TIME!

Only dumb fans. Ignorant people get attracted to something because of vulgarity.

What matters is what goes INSIDE the ring, that's what boxing is all about.

I agree with most here. I could care less about a fighter's personality as long as they back it up in the ring or attempt to back it up in the ring. Like Mayorga or James Toney. They talk junk, but at the same time they handle their business or at least try to do so.

I dont think thats fair to say it is entertaining to see fighters get heated at press conferences. adds a little spice to the mix. To each his own it is a fight after all so getting into someones head before is just part of the whole game.

i've seen a mayweather jr fan go off about how another dude acts and then straight up defend mayweather jrs actions ..

same as with tysons fans ...or anything bad boy of boxing fan ..

i guess it all depends on who the fan is rooting for .. if a tyson fan is rooting for tyson then he'll have an excuse for every faliure in that mans flawed design ..
buuut godforbid if evander holyfield has 20 kids that he supports

personally i could care less about how a man acts outside the ring
