Default willie limond reveals promotion aim

IBO intercontinental lightweight champion Willie Limond aims to turn promoter in a bid to keep himself busier in the ring.
Under the name Glasgow City Promotions, Limond is in the process of applying for a promoter's licence and he has already planned his first show for February 27 in Paisley.

The Glaswegian, who is targeting Zambia's Godwin Mutampuka as his next opponent at the Lagoon Leisure Centre, believes his dual role will benefit not only him but other Scottish boxers who are facing too long a break between fights.

"I am applying for my licence and the hearing will be sometime next month," Limond said.

"Everything is in place and I don't see any reason for me to get knocked back. Other fighters have been given licences.

"It is something that I have always wanted to do.

"I have the right people behind me and hopefully I can make a success of it.

"The tickets for this show are being printed this week and, even if I am unsuccessful in getting my licence, the show will go ahead.

"There are a lot of dinner shows in Scotland but they only have four fights on at a time.
"So we are going to have more public shows where we can have eight fights at a time.

"I still see myself as a fighter; I am only 29 and I still have a lot in the tank.

"But I have been inactive and if a fighter is inactive then he is not

producing his best.

"So the best way to go about sorting that is to promote my own shows and fights.

"Hopefully, we will also keep boxers like Kevin McIntyre and Kris Carslaw busy."

McIntyre was controversially stripped of his British welterweight title last summer after suffering a back injury and then lost a mandatory challenge to his successor Kell Brook in November when he was knocked out in the first round at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall.

The 30-year-old is looking forward to fighting in front of his hometown fans for the first time as he looks to get his career back on track.

"I turned pro 10 years again and still haven't boxed in my home town," he said.

"So this is a great opportunity for me.

"But it's about getting back in to the ring.

"The idea is to keep active and fight every couple of months until I get another chance at the title.

"Last year was a disaster, between injuries, being stripped of my title and losing to Brook.

"Things didn't go right with training and my weight but, fair play to him, in the couple of minutes it lasted he showed he was sharper than me.

"I went home dejected but when I woke up the next morning, I was making plans for the new year.

"I know I am better than that and I want to get back to winning ways.

"I want to let the British Boxing Board of Control to know that I am there so that they put me back in the mix for the mandatory position again."

Carslaw is hoping to continue his progress in the welterweight division this year with the help of Limond.

He said: "I only fought twice last year.

"I need more fights and I will be looking to move on to six-rounders after this show."

Best of luck to Willie. Good move for him- if he's not getting/been offered fights put them on himself.

I heard, I read on some classy blog somewhere

Can someone help me understand this - i though promoters and managers were essentially the same thing but it seems they're not.

What's the difference?

As far as I understand, the promoter's main aim is to make as much money for himself as he can whereas a manager is there to make sure his fighter gets the fights/purses he wants. A manager's purpose is to look after his fighter's interest.

That's why I think in the US you're not allowed to promote AND manage a fighter as there's a clear conflict of interest. It's allowed here for some reason. ******, for example, manages a lot of the fighters he promotes.

well this is the thing, he SHOULD get his chance because theirs plenty left in the tank, he looked fresh and fit on the telly the other night, although he is preparing for the fight on the 27th, thats 6 weeks away mind you, he's been quiet because he's a risk, a lot of promoters wo'nt want to match their fighters with willie because he has the tools to beat them.
