i've heard about a certain drug that thins the blood (can't remember the name) is banned in most sports certainly at a high level cos they can enhance performance
anyone know if thinning the blood has this effect? apparently a lot of omega 3 will do this too because of it's thinning effect it's well known that it speeds up messages in brain cells |

Cod liver thins your blood a bit .I don't think blood thinners enhance your performance.Aspirin is a well known blood thinner. If you take a couple of tablets and cut yourself, you will bleed for longer than if you hadn't taken them. I read once of a boxer taking an aspirin before a fight . His corner couldn't staunch the bleeding from a cut and the fight was stopped.
It's probably a bad idea to take aspirin or cod liver oil immediately before and after a high impact sport such as boxing. I think you might be confusing blood thinners with EPO (Erythropoietin),cockneyhardman. It improves the red blood cell count in your body meaning you will carry more oxygen from your lungs to your organs and tissues and increasing your endurance. Cyclists from the tour de france have been shown to be using this hormone. This particular drug is illegal in boxing,I believe and is recommended that it not be administered without medical supervision. |

Their mechanism seems to be the opposite of that of EPO. ![]() Maybe EPO is dangerous because it thickens the blood, due to the increase in oxygen carrying red blood cells or platelets, leading to increased risk of heart attacks or strokes. |

Interesting. It seems that a lot of the herbs I supplement my diet with are blood thinners. Chamomile, garlic, clove, anise, fish oil, flax oil, ginger, licorice, onion, turmeric, ginseng. I use most of these on a daily basis, I'm surprised blood isn't coming out through my pores

Inuits who had a diet rich in cod and seal blubber were known to be vulnerable to heavy internal bleeding after minor accidents. This is something to take into account when you are boxing.Speaking from personal experience, my hemorrhoids tend to bleed when I take a few cod liver oil tablets. ![]() ![]() I wonder whether aspirin ,because of the thinning of the blood, would reduce endurance,by reducing how much oxygen is delivered around the body.Apparently, it reduces muscle soreness thereby improving muscular endurance. It also increases the level of nitric oxide in the body widening the blood vessels and so increasing blood flow.Hmmm.... From studies it seems that aspirin has little effect on endurance. So these effects may cancel each other out. Some studies also seem to suggest to suggest that aspirin reduces potential muscle growth after a workout. So it would not be beneficial if you are an athlete wishing to put on heavy muscle mass.BTW here is a very simple explanation of how EPO works, according to the BBC website: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Maybe, athletes on EPO take aspirin to counteract the blood thickening effect. |

Similarly, there's a big difference in how phytochemicals affect inflammations and how artificial chemicals often described as medicine do it. The first tend to contribute to healing by allowing the inflammation to do its work but keeping it under control (for example), the latter completely blocks the inflammation and thereby prevents a cure but as long as the pain is gone people don't care. |

I have read that fish oil can tend to have an affect on your blood, as far as being a little blood thinning or something. However, I don't think a normal dose of fish oil will have much of an affect on you. I think this would only apply if you are taking massive doses, or are taking it in conjunction with something else that also has a similar effect. I take [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] by Nordic Naturals and really love it. It's great for those who keep very active as well. I don't know that it increases endurance, but it is definitely great for you.

My mother is on warfarin, its a strong blood thinner for people with blood clots. She also takes fish oil... I am thinking she talked it over with her doctor.
It is pretty serious medication and she has to get blood tested almost every week or two in order to adjust the dose just right so its not too thick or too thin. She was told to avoid too much vitamin K which thins blood and would mess up the test results. I am not sure if my dad is on blood thinners. He is told to take a 300mg aspirin and omega 3 everyday, I know atleast that much. So I dont imagine that omega 3 would thin the blood nearly as much as warfarin. My mom was told to stop taking 80mg baby aspirin because the doctor said that aint going to really do much of anything in terms of thinning the blood. I cant imagine anyone taking warafarin for performance enhancement, I dont know how it would benefit but certainly its a powerful drug and you could have issues with internal bleeding or some shit if you take too much. |

my dad does bleed easy, ei it doesnt clot well. I think he must be on something but I know its not warfarin or that strong.
I take aspirin almost everyday and a few times a day now that I got this swelling from allergies and an eye infection. But I havent noticed any problems with blood clotting on the few scratches I got during yard work. |

How much Fish Oil do you guys use per day?
I read an article earlier that stated "surveys show that nine out of ten Britons don't get the minimum they need to maintain a healthy heart (around 500mg/day), let alone to support optimal brain and immune system functioning (1000mg/day)." I've never taken anything near that so I'm looking to get some decent quality 1000mg capsules this week. |
