Default Marvin Hagler vs. Bernard Hopkins

Hagler though is not a man easily deterred. He defines the ability to power through obstacles while keeping on fighting and applying pressure. He would never land anything clean enough to seriously hurt the defensive Hopkins, but he would land enough shots and throw enough shots more to win the majority of the close rounds. Hagler by unanimous decision over Hopkins.

Your thoughts?

I don't know to be honest. B-Hop was/is a master technician. Even in some of his more recent fights at 45+ I've seen guys try to hit him in a space the size of a phone booth and he manages to evade them, while landing a few going away presents. 15 years ago he would have been something else to try and outsmart, outland, etc.. In addition he was always kind of big for a middleweight and had a frame well suited for fighting at higher classes. And lastly, he still has yet to see his first stoppage loss.

No one is getting KOd thats for sure

It would be a very close and competitive fight but I favor Marvin to slightly pull it off, but I wouldn't be surprised who wins unless someone gets finished

A 12 rounder I think Hagler wins on points, in a tough gritty fight...

A 15 rounder like back in the early 1980's , i see Hagler winning more convincingly with Hopkins hitting the deck late in the fight, and using every survival trick in his book to keep from getting KO'D..

There is just no way HAGLER could lose this, Hopkins just didn't have the firepower to keep Marvin off him, and Hagler has too good a beard...

Well wrote and I agree. Marvin also had a better jab then Hopkins and at times would keep him at the end of it as the points built up for him.

Hopkins, for some strange reason, is underrated. Haggler is overrated. Hopkins, I believe, would win on points.

I think based on styles Hopkins has a great chance here. Hopkins has always been vulnerable to blinding speed (Jones, Calzaghe, Taylor etc) which Hagler doesn't have, and Marvin wasn't the greatest tactician, often finding a way to lose / make hard work of fights he should have had in the bag due to him being a bit fuzzy in his thinking.

I think Hopkins takes a scrappy and contentious decision.

At Middleweight Marvin was comfortable and like Monzon never gave much thought of moving up. A king is a king in his own kingdom and while B-Hop was a very good middleweight I dont think he had a resume as deep as Marvin or Monzon. I was never overwhelmingly impressed with B-Hop as a middleweight but I thought he gained strength and used his knowledge moving up but a busier fighter like Hagler could outwork him. Awkward and close Southpaw boxer/puncher vs Slickster/Cutie ...Marvin close UD 12-15 2-4 round edge for Marvin

Hagler is not overrated. Quite the opposite in fact he is the epitome of an underrated fighter who literally had to clean out the division before getting a title shot. All this in a much tougher era than Hopkins has been a part of. Hagler all the way for me.

Haglers looks a lot better to me than Hopkins.
I can't deny that Hopkins had an excellent record at middleweight, but he looks inferior in comparison to Hagler.

He isn't busy enough for Hagler he is tough enough and skilled enough but just doesn't have the work rate to win

Styles make fights, and I think Hopkins is all wrong for Hagler...

Hagler was the better middleweight but I can't shake the feeling that Hopkins would just win enough rounds to sneak a very close, very controversial decision.

Hagler would win his rounds more clearly but nobody is getting stopped, and hopkins 'hustle' would edge it for me.

Great H2H matchup, thanks op!
