Default Gym "initiation"

i don't know any other word to really use for it but i had a question for people who have attended gyms or know people who attend them for either MMA or boxing.
there is a gym around here that if somebody comes in wanting to be a fighter and train that they r forced to fight somebody who has been training there for a while and is usually much bigger than them.
one guy wanted to only train and not even be a fighter and they talked him in to fighting for a shorter amount of time and he thought it was only going to be boxing and dude did some MMA stuff on him and messed him up.
they say their reason for it is to c if the person has the heart to be a fighter.
i don't really agree, i think there r better ways to find out and this shouldn't be going on.
how common is this??

Some trainers test you a bit but only after you learned basic skills and only up to a certain extent, you should be able to defend yourself and no serious damage should be done. Sounds like a horrible gym to me mate.

Sad... and then "boxers" wonder why there is so much controversy around the sport of boxing and why people consider it barbaric... I pity your gym...

On a side note however, nice avatar questionkid!

it's not my gym. just a gym some ppl go to around here. i thought for it to be horrible too. the one guy that thought they were just gonna box for a lil i guess wasn't even in the ring. i think that it's retarded and almost cruel. someone could honestly get killed like that.

Not even that it can go to the extreme of fatally hurting someone but that they make the sport look bad by acting like fools. Their beating up on people without experience to compensate for their small dick just makes them appear childish and barbaric, and their acting childish and barbaric ultimatly hurts the sport...

Heh, I'm not sure about that one. My gym is boxing and mma/bjj and we never really have a problem. The mma trainer isnt as good as our boxing trainer though, kinda dumb. They've started having open sparring on Saturdays and asked me and a couple boxers to come and spar with a couple of the mma guys so that they could work on their stand up game. This last Saturday was their second time having sparring on Saturday and a few of us boxers started to spar, and then suddenly, they came up wih reason to leave and places they had to be at, and left one by one. WEIRD!

This sounds like this shittest/gayest gym to ever gay the gay. Most coaches will go easy on you and build up from scratch if you've got 0 boxing experience. Any gym that throws you into the deep end to do battle like a classic Star Trek rerun is shit. Stay well clear.

My gym does something similar to this. Not at all to this extent but same concept. My third day at the gym when I was 15 I got thrown in with a 21 or 22 year old who outweighed me by probably 10 pounds and he had more experience. Bloodied me up pretty good . I know most of you guys won't agree with this sort of thing but I'm kind of on the fence about it, true it will turn away 80% of the newcomers but the folks who stick around are the ones you can work with. Then again, my coach is old school and a bastard.
