Bad Matchup for Earnie.

Mercer had the heart and chin to weather the storm for the first few rounds, and once he got Shavers in trouble would finish him.

Mercer by KO between rounds 3-5.

I agree with this. Unless Earnie was able to repeat his ten round decision win against Henry Clark behind his jab, or hammered his right to Mercer's body throughout (as he did with Tiger Williams), this would be Ray's fight. My observation with boxing has been that in a confrontation between an "irresistible force" and an "immovable object," the "immovable object" ultimately prevails, and that would be Mercer in this instance.

I tend to agree with this.

A reasonably heavy puncher with an iron chin beats an ATG puncher who has a shakey chin. Mercer is probably the superior technician as well. (and I don't rate him that highly, though he did give Lewis a great fight).

He had Holyfield in all kinds of trouble as well, and was very good against Holmes when they fought ring-centre (Holmes won that fight off the ropes), even out-jabbing Holmes at times. Mercer was a smooth operator, for a iron-chin/stone-punch type boxer.

Ray Mercer by TKO - he had a better chin, better stamina, and more skills. Mercer would wear Shavers down and stop him.

I like Mercer, he had a pretty solid chin and better stamina than Shavers, Earnie would fizzle out and get stopped before 10

I think this might pan out like the Mercer Morrison fight,Shavers gets off to a good start shaking Mercer, but shoots his wad and Mercer comes on and takes over ,stopping Earnie around the 7th.

Mercer was a damn good fighter (I would say borderline great, fell just short) with a great chin and very very good power. He beats Shavers 8 out of 10 times.

I too would pick with Mercer, but Shavers hit freaken hard. Mercer was never known for defense, and a fighter with out much defense fighter is no guarantee vs Shavers.

It is odd that Mercer took hard shots from big punchers in Morrison and Lewis rather well, yet he was in fact stunned by journeyman Wilson, and hurt and dropped by Holyfield.

Mercer had a very good chin but it was overrated to some degree. If Mercer was to defeat Shavers, it would be via his vastly underrated left jab, the one he sported from 1995-onward.

His jab wasn't exactly bad before 1995 either. What success he had against Holmes (such as making Larry do a silly dance in round 1) came from his jab. However, as you suggest, it wasn't until around 1995 that Mercer started to use the jab as often as he should have...

... Holy crap! Is it 2006 again, or have you returned, Rubber Warrior?
