Did he ever demonstrate any kind of an uppercut?
I see him working the body so beautifully on the inside and nearly completely negating what the other guy can do... But I don't see any uppercuts. Maybe I just haven't seen enough of him. Just thinking about the heavy hands he did, I'd imagine an uppercut from him would be killer. |

Chavez mainly threw punches in three punch combinations. A left jab, Right then follow it up with a left hook to the body. Or a right, left to the body then a sraight right hand. These mixture of punches in conjunction with upperbody movement was a large portion of Chavez' offense. When the oppurtunity presented itself, he did throw uppercuts, but not very often.

.....so the opportunity to throw uppercuts does'nt present itself when your opponent is in backpedal mode. Chavez did throw uppercuts vs Rosario. One fight in particular rings very clear where Chavez used uppercuts to beautiful effects. Chavez got Meldrick Taylor in their rematch, to where Taylor was coming to him, then he unleached a massive three or four punch all uppercut combination that had Taylor reeling. The shot that initially dropped Meldrick in that rematch was a massive 45 uppercut hook right on Meldrick's jaw that sent him flying to the canvas and landing on his back with both feet in the air. .....but usually it's the counterpunching assasins like JMM, who make their opponents come to them, who have a better opportunity to show their uppercuts! |

Fuentes actually backed Chavez up in the early part of the fight and landed some good shots. Fuentes is exactly the type of tough and strong willed opponent that would have Chavez pull out a full arsenal of jabs, hooks and uppercuts. I agree, its very entertaining to watch a great pull out a full arsenal and start to wear down a fighter who's will is on par with theirs. |
