I knew when he narrowly outpointed a useless Roger Turner in 1992 that he wasn't going anywhere. He had an unusually good chin, impossibly short arms, a good body attack, and decent, but highly overrated power. He built his record on no-hopers and always failed when he stepped up to the big time. The Ayala win produced an exciting fight, but that was not the same Ayala we'd seen before, and it was hardly one-sided.

I know next to nothing about Ayala... So I'm curious. He was supposedly an absolute beast at his best, wasn't he?
What exactly comes to mind when you think of him? And how good is Yory's chin, anyway? |

Sal summed up Campas just about to a tee.
In his early career before he lost to Trinidad, my feeling was that he was a prospect that could stay and be a solid champion for some time. Campas' defensive deficiencies were quite evident when he stepped up vs top notch competition. Campas' defense was and is so porous, he hardly has any upper body movement, that it pains me to see him take so many clean shots to his facial area. Spot on Sal, alot of boxing scribes have the impression that Campas is a big puncher, but those who have seen him vs better competition know that although he may have heavy hands, he's far from a big puncher. Campas' KO's usually come through sheer attrition and stamina, but he's certainly not a big puncher. |

This "Poor man's Trinidad" Had Trinidad on his Ass in thier fight! His lack of defense was his downfall. But his chin was solid. Trinidad landed solid punches, that would have anyone else unconcious, But Campas wouldn't go down!

i have the turner fight and i certainly wouldnt call turner useless. he was a bit like roger mayweather and he gave yori boy lots of movement and angles that made him look awkward at times.
but yori certainly had power.....just look at marquez face after the fight. as for turner, he was the NABF champ and was unbeaten in 22 fights. and he had a win over olympian kenny gould. pretty good fighter in my book. |
