Default Sugar Ray Never Really Beat Duran

**** THE RECORD, RAY LEONARD NEVER REALLY BEAT ROBERT. I rate ray highly, but he never fought the real roberto in the last 2 fights of their trilogy.

i remember the first fight more fondly, when ray nearly beat duran at his own game. that fight was close. both fighters walk away from that fight with equal credit. Duran for beating a bigger, stronger, exceptional welterweight champion at the peak of his powers AND ray for surviving a vicious attack from duran and nearly beating him on the inside

How many men survived a beating from duran and went close to beating him?

Ray tried to box in that fight, but got sucked in to a fight. He took a few rounds recovering from being shook by RD. the result could of beeen different if hedn't of got nailed

THE NO MAS FIGHT WAS JUST AN EXHIBITION FOR RAY. ONLY ONE MAN SHOWED UP. DURAN WAS ****ED.

THE SAME FOR THE THIRD FIGHT

Leonard was stronger mentally in New Orleans, and prepared himself the way a professional fighter should, unlike Duran.

Leonard won it, fair and square.

Leonard clearly won the 2nd and 3rd fight. Its not his problem if Duran didnt do what he had to do in New Orleans. And anyway in Montreal Leonard brawled with Duran for no reason, he just outboxed him after.

Obviously. That wasn't in question. Neither is the fact that Leonard beat Duran.

i am a big ray loenard fan as you will gauge if you read the post fully. the wins over benitez and hearns made him immortal. I like him as a person is well. he has done a lot for boxing over the years

But the durans win were just ordinary fights to me. ray even said in beyond the glory that he new that duran wouldn't be himself thats why he chose a quick rematch

I'm not overly convinced he beat a real Duran.... Just like I'm not overly convinced he beat Hagler.

I think I understand what you are trying to say, Tigeredge. The first fight was a fight, the type of encounter we associate with exciting fights. I thought it was more one-sided than you did, but Leonard proved something by surviving Duran's vicious onslaught. Duran was a man possessed that night.

The second fight wasn't so much Leonard winning but Duran giving the fight away. If the Duran from Montreal had showed up, Leonard would be facing another night of living hell. As it was, the fight was fairly evenly contested for what it was: Duran several notches below his Montreal demonic mode and Leonard generally making an ass of himself (sorry, fanboys, but it's true).

The third fight was, honestly, the worst of them all. What a rip off! I already talked about this in the other thread, so I'm not going into it again. It will just piss me off to think about it anymore.

There's a growing majority who aren't convinced he beat Hagler.
