I'm not going to critique your list as everyone has their own opinion on the matter.
Just be prepared to defend your #1 selection against KTFO.

That's a nice fight poster in your avatar.

Let's hear a little bit about your criteria? If you're ranking these fighters purely on "greatness", I suppose Rocky is a defencable choice at #1 but I can't imagine what criteria would allow you to have Rocky at #1 and Johnson outside the top ten - Johnson has a better win as a conender than Frazier, Lewis, Dempsey and one or two others on your list, including Rocky. If you bass it purely upon the fighters title years then Johnson can perhaps be left of, but I would say he had better defences than maybe Dempsey and arguably Rocky.

Rocky Marciano was a wonderful fighter; and i'm not one of these guys who homes in on size, but the fact is I believe that BIGGER wonderful fighters would have given him fits. Liston is an example of a fighter who would have handed Rocky his head I think but he doesn't make your list....it's a complicated business I guess.

Anyway, what's the most important thing a fighter has to do/have to make your list?

I wouldn't have Marciano at one (despite 49-0 against some very game, the odd number of great opponents). Speaking from a purely head-to-head viewpoint Marciano's placing would take a tumble- most likely to the fringes of (or even outside the Top 10). I'd favour Ali, Tyson, Holmes, Liston, Lewis and some others to beat Rocky. I put him at #6 because of his acomplishments, unbeaten record and the fact that he was a genuinely very good fighter- it's a ranking which balances out head-to head with legacy and that I think is fair.

Liston and Johnson make the tail end of my Top 10, whilst Lewis would be a good deal higher. I also think you have Foreman quite a bit too high.

Just out of curiosity, where would you rank Johnson and Tyson?

5. Jack Johnson
6. Jack Dempsey
7. George Foreman
8. Joe Frazier
9. Sonny Liston

My absolute most important criteria is how well the fighter did in their particular era. Secondly, their opposition, thirdly, record, and head to head.

Marciano ranks well because he dominated his era, went undefeated, and his reign consisted of at least, medium-level opposition throughout. I watched a few of his fights lately, and I feel he is extremely underrated in the skills department. Its almost cliche to have him well down the list in a ATG list, but I feel its a mistake to assume Rocky was technically challenged. His style was ackward, but very deceiving. Also, Rocky's power and punching techique, is right up there with the best. If we keep Rocky within the context of the era he reigned in, he can certainly rank 1 all-time.

Foreman at 4 because he was a force of nature, and demolished high caliber opponents like Frazier and Norton. Foreman also pretty much fought the best fighters throughout 70's, 80's, and 90's, managing success over good level fighters. Foreman's impressive record, KO percentage, and winning of the title again so many years later, greatly improves his ATG rating, IMO.

Good list, cant really argue with anything, I have the same top 3 with Louis on top but Rocky was a great Champ and could be # 1 ,I got Ali at 3 and I think those 3 are a lock
