[quote=ChrisPontius]He had outstanding speed, no question. His speed is the reason i think he beats a slow plodder like Liston.[/quote
Holmes had good speed, but I feel that Liston would plod right through Holmes, ofcourse I like Sonny and Holmes I don't. |

when he was the benefactor of close, questionable, decisions like the Norton fight that's fine with Holmes, when he loses one like the Spinks fight he says he was robbed. But probably the Marciano remark did it for me.Joe Louis never said Dempsey couldn't carry his jockstrap,Hank Aaron never said that of Ruth.It is just the arrogant attitude of athletes like Holmes,Barry Bonds,Pete Rose that grate against me. |

Holmes was the most complete and well rounded heavyweight who ever lived. When you balnace out all areas to score him in. Stamina, power, speed, chin, jab, recorvery powers, ring generalship, durability, mental toughness, inside fighting. He had it all, and when averaging everything out he's the most complete.
Better all round than Tyson and Ali, thats just two for starters. I'm not saying he was superman and was head and shoulders above every other great heavyweight, but he was the best in my opinion. |

Are there any quotes from Larry Holmes regarding Marciano that were made a while after the Spinks fight? |

Why do you think? He was a classless buffoon in almost every interview he ever had. Not many of the magazine & newspaper writers were that keen on him either. In fact, it's almost impossible for me to read an interview with Holmes (from any time in the 1980s) without wanting to fight him myself.

Sure. Who else would be up there? Corbett, Johnson, Dempsey (of Toledo), Tunney, Sharkey (handspeed only), Louis (handspeed only), Walcott (footwork), Patterson (handspeed only), Ali and Holmes. Throw out Sharkey, Louis, Walcott and Patterson for their lack of overall speed, and peak Holmes is clearly at least one of the top six.
Nat Fleischer flatly declared Ali the fastest heavyweight of all time, and he saw everybody on this list at their peak, from Johnson to Ali. Among the remaining top six, only Ali and Holmes were over 200 pounds at their fastest, and only Ali and Holmes had a reach recorded at 80 inches or more, giving them an advantage over any speedster with shorter arms. (I can't bring myself to rate transient WBA champions, or 12 round era title claimants.) |
