Default Roy Jones Junior v Ezzard Charles

I rate Charles above Jones, but I think that Charles might struggle with this one. Charles is a rythmic fighter, perhaps, he needs to be scoring and in a rythym to be at his absolute best. Jones is a fighter capable of breaking his opponents rythym without the slightest detriment to his own.

How do you guys see this one going? 15 rounds, 1970's ruleset

Ezz was all but un beatable at Light Heavy.Jones would attempt to break his rythum but Charles would figure that out and adjust.Ezz had all the tools at Lt.Hvy. and Jones gets a Boxing lesson in this one.

Much as I am a Jones detractor I have to admit that he could potentialy have beaten virtualy any light heavyweight.

I have to agree. Head to head Jones is hard to pick against. It's his resume that stops him from being first, probably, because he had the tools to beat anyone. It's not inconceivable that Charles wins, but Jones is so tough to catch.

Jones isnt a top 5 lightheavy in terms of accomplishments but in terms of head to head. There isnt a single fighter 175 and below I would favor over Roy Jones. At his best his speed, power and agility will make him competitive with anybody. I think Charles is greater in a historical sense but I'm afraid that he'd the one facing an uphill batter rather than the other way around.

RJJ is heavily overrated at LHW, at MW I rate him very high head-to-head, but at LHW not. Charles, who was clearly one of the best LHW´s ever, was pysically stronger, had a better chin, powerwise they would be equal ca., but I would favour Ezzard on points, he proved in this weight class that he could beat the bests, a thing RJJ didn´t...

Charles UD 15 RJJ

(9-6)

How is it BS? He went the distance against Marciano in their first fight, taking some monster shots in the process. He was only KO'd 7 times in 25 losses and 116 fights

Charles was knocked down or stopped countless times. Jones only has been down once (due to slip) and stopped twice.

Jones fought light punchers like Montel Griffith and Virgil Hill. Even Hopkins is no big banger (although an ATG fighter). Jones' opposition pales in comparison to Charles.' It is not even close.
The ? wasnt about their resumes, it was about head to head.
And if it comes down to that prime for prime.
I pick RJ anyday, to much skill.

What that has to do with chin? Charles' chin was slightly above average, nothing too solid. That Marciano was unable to put him down the 1st time only shows how overated that crude brawler and his power are.

This would be an interesting fight. If Charles could get Roy Jones to wrestle with him so that he could apply some of his tricks, then Roy is in for a long night. Charles chin wasn't as bad as all that. He lost some early on, but he stepped up way too quick. Once he got on track, he was virtually unbeatable at light heavyweight. Fantastic boxer. But there were light heavyweights who could have beaten him and Jones is one of them. Jones was fantastic too. In any case, we are talking about two all-time great light heavies in the ring together, so it would have been special.

I think his point is chin spefic - if Jones had fought the same competition as Charels he may well have been down/stopped more often than he was.
