Default "99% of fighters take up the sport to feel respected..."

"99% of fighters take up the sport because they want to feel respected. The worry of performing badly and being made to look foolish is greater than the worry of getting hurt."

- Barry McGuigan

You agree or disagree with this statement? Split it in two if you like, you agree that fighters, for the most part, get into it so they will be respected? And worry more about being fooled than hurt?

i agree more or less...alot of fighters took it up to get away from bullies ... and afterwords they develop almost a bully complex .. to where they feel they are in charge...they are the authority .. there for they get the respect

I did it because growing up in the 1940s in Brooklyn everybody 'n his brother was either an amateur or a pro boxer. Rep was more important than money.

Boxing was HUGE then. Only baseball shared the front page of the Sports Section. Football 'n basketball barely got any ink.

Kevin Rooney said that people often start boxing because they have confidence problems. I think it's totally true.

I boxed because I liked hurting people , especially defenceless ones

great quote i agree to an extent maybe around 60%

i started boxing as thats what i wanted to do. Around 11 or 12 i was a waste of space getting into trouble and fighting (not always winning but fighting i loved fighting.) I then wanted to become a boxer i just wanted too for no reason i woke up 1 day and wanted to box.

Now i box as i enjoy it and want to achieve something and yes be respected by other boxers.

i can see why some people start boxing for confidence i never had that problem i was a confident bugger

Well i agree that the fear of getting fooled is igger than that of being hurt physically for many, no doubt. But clearly none of us can speak for everyone, there are so many different types of people out there with different personalities and different backgrounds, many will have different fears than others do.

But i reckon the getting fooled thing is more common than the getting hurt thing, personally

To a large degree, yes, but also location plays a huge part in your make-up and the choices available.

Boxing is as much about respect as it is of a means of a way out.

about location

im from a good family background, live comfortably etc...

many people think boxing is like poor guys have more drive determination. Which for reasons they do. but i have as much as heart as anyone as i dont have to be boxing for a way out i choose to do it and that gives me drive and determination

Yeah, that seems fair. I was attracted to boxing by the athleticism of the sport and the fact that you can only blame yourself for failure. It's an amazing sport. I also have confidence and anger problems. I'd definitely rather take a beating than be humiliated or punked out. It also offered me a possibility to brutalize the punks that jumped me, bad neighborhood & whatnot.

i dont see how boxing helps you in a fight

i was better at fighting with out boxing i was just wild and never gave up now im a bit cleverer but boxing is the opposite of fighting

yeh good point only you can fail i used to hate it in team games when somebody aint pulling there weight. Even when im training in the gym i go crazy if people are slacking off
