Muhammad Ali, beat better fighters and has the better resume in only 60 fights. He also did far more for boxing and possessed more skill.

I think I have Pep higher at about 8..And Ali right behind him at 9.

Im starting to think that Ali deserves to be higher though. Better fighter from what I have seen and can gather from accounts.
I dont think Willie maintained the same kind of dominance at feather that Ali did at heavy...then again Im sure someone can prove that to be untrue.

I still wouldnt have them far apart in the end..probably 3 spots at most. Pep is a solid choice for top10 alltime IMO...Im just starting to think he may be better suited a little lower in my personal list.

What the hell does this have to do with who was the greater fighter?

This is an irresponsible statement. It's gonna take an awful lot to justify arguing that anyone has more skill than the Will 'o the Wisp.

Ali. Both stayed at one weight, Ali dominated a better class of opponents, and did so in fewer fights. Pretty easy one for me.

My issue is that I just havent seen enough of Pep in his prime.

Ive seen plenty of Ali...whilst Pep is clearly the superior defensive fighter (and one of the best Ive seen, even with the limited film I have viewed) Ali's overall game impresses me a bit more.
Just think he had a little more offensive capability, relative speed and chin.. whilst still being a very impressive defensive fighter himself.

Saddler was probably about as good as anyone Ali beat, but the problem is that Pep was bested in their series, and was very decisively KO'd or stopped in those losses. Ali won his biggest rivalries (Frazier, Liston) and beat Foreman first time out.

I rank Ali clearly higher.

Interestingly enough, Angelo Dundee and Carmine Basillio both think that Willie Pep was the all time best pound 4 pound fighter.

I think Pep clearly possessed more boxing skill although some might disagree with this.

This doesn't mean that I necessarily rate him higher than Ali. I just think that Pep was more of a boxing master while Ali got by with trendemous amounts of natural talent and later with his toughness.

Pre-plane crash Pep and pre-draft Ali were about as dominant in their respective divisions, I would actually give Pep the edge there. Ali coming back to beat the likes of Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Lyle, Shavers was of course legendary and probably puts his overall resume above Pep's.

There is no wrong answer here, I have both in my top 3 p4p behind Robinson & ahead of Armstrong.

I generally have Ali at 2 & Pep at 3 but Ali is my all time fav boxer even tho I like Pep too.

The people Ali beat & the fights he was involved in while past his best give him a slight edge but NO-ONE was a better boxer than Willie Pep so no arguments from me even if someone had Pep no1.

Pep.

A Heavyweight who enjoyed a size advantage over the majority of his opponents would have to be unbeatable in order to beat out the lighter contingent of elite boxers- such is the nature of P4P, at least how I interpret it. Ali wasn't, though still certifiably an ATG. As such, Pep ranks higher and has the skills and accomplishments to back it up. Short of running out of rounds to catch up to Sammy Angott, he was undefeated before his 1947 crash and was the best pure boxer his division had ever seen.

My vote goes to Pep, and it's not really that close for me.
