I agree with Jeff Jones (obviously ) apart from the 'drop dead' comment. Dont wish that on the man just think he was overrated.
And also I believed it was Junior Jones at first which is why I wrote 'Never heard that one' on my first post

All this, 'I was JC's biggest fan until he put a knife through my heart' sounds like some shit out of a Barbara Cartland book. Get a damn grip and admit you are a hater. Don't worry, there are plenty of you around.

Just lay off the melodramatic shit, homo.

So he's suddenly reverted to a scumbag, don't you feel that he maybe made that statement to convince himself to leave the sport?

Egotistical yes, you know get out while the goings good....the sports finished i'm out at the top etc.

In some ways he wasn't completely off the mark as in Boxing has become such a niche sport we're going to have to scratch around for televised fights in Britian from now on now the major players (TV) have turned there backs on the sport.

How could you be a fan of a great celebrated fighter like Joe and suddenly hate his guts for a out of turn comment?

True on both counts.

Anyway, I think Calzaghe would've done better against Jones at LH rather than SM (still would've lost both fights though). He looked unreal at the lighter weight but less invincible at 175lbs. Anyone agree?

0-0 isn't bad, but not earth shattering

Joe was a 'modern great' for me not a 'all time great'. I respect Joe for his boxing and giving us a great night when he schooled Jeff Lacy, a fight you can watch over again. A prime Jones would of beaten joe probably in the 8th round by KO if there was a man to beat Joe by KO i think he could of done it.
I have to add I hate all these little minded people that trash talk Joe C and call him a slapper, the fact is over time his hands gave him trouble i think Joe could bang when he wanted to as he demostrated quite a few times, as he did when he come back of the canvas to KO Byron Mitchell as Joe demonstrated how to hit someone 26 times unanswered.

The jab was a completely redundant weapon against Calzaghe. Absolutely no point in throwing it as nobody established it against Joe in his whole career. That's how he was able to dictate the pace so easily against guys who tried to box their way in.

And remember, Reid & Hopkins never even tried to throw it and they both came the closest to beating him.

So the lack of a jab is no bad thing against Calzaghe.

You need every shot in the book to fight a guy that throws 1,000+ punches a fight and if you have a good jab of course you will use it.
Southpaws are notoriously difficult to establish the jab against and coupled with Joe's own awkward style made one of the best jabbers in the game, Kessler, scratch his head about how to get to Calzaghe later on. JC was a master of making the other guy pay when they tried to force the issue.

Reid waited, Hopkins waited.... and they got results.

I can't remember the Reid fight very well anymore but I just recall Reid throwing (and landing) big right hands, not boxing pretty with neat one-twos.

The ultimate, clear thinking counter puncher with a big powerful right hand is the perfect foil for Calzaghe's style.

It was exactly the same with JC when he boxed B-Hop.... back in the day I think that B-Hop would have beaten JC..... JC even offered B-Hop a winner take all purse but B-Hop never took it....

I think that timimg and who you don't fight makes all the difference... a good example of this is when Hatton boxed Tsyzu..... the timing was right for Hatton in a very tough fight in which he did not start to pull away until the 8th round IMO.....

Hatton did not fight many other fighters that could have de-railed his route to Tsyzu back then... I think that we know who the main contender was... and probably still is....
