Calzaghe easily. He proved in the past and right now that he could beat the best, he has 21 title defenses until now and is very consistent, a thing, Toney isn´t. James Toney is for me anyhow very overrated. IMO he would struggle with Calzaghe´s fast and unpredictable combinations, I see a clear UD for Joe...

Calzaghe UD 12 Toney

(8-4)

I agree. Calzaghe has the right style to beat Toney, who could be outworked. Calzaghe would take quite a few counter rights, but Toney's workrate wouldn't be enough to offset Calzaghe's busy slapping.

I dunno, I'd like to think toney would win but this is a very, very bad style matchup for him. His stationary, patient precise-counter punching style could work very well against him against a fast, busy southpaw like Joe.

I meant, he never struggled with the likes of Tiberi, Sosa, Williams, etc.. And Calzaghe never needed the judges like Toney.

Resume is a very open thing. Calzaghe has shown no vulnerabilities to any stylistic thing except for a guy who is willing to take 4 punches to land 1 solid timed overhand right and even then, it was a relatively off night.

And as Luigi pointed out, Toney struggled with way lesser fighters at times and had no consistency, even if he does hold bigger wins. Remember, resume's also include losses.

Not everyone gets the oppurtunity for elite fights anyway, let's use old timer Wills for example and how he never got a shot at Dempsey, a lot of people pick Wills over Dempsey.

Toney shells up far too much into his guard and shoulder roll with attacked, Calzaghe would just keep a consistent assault going and use his superior foot and hand speed to win round after round, no doubt he'd eat some right hands, but it took Toney 10 rounds to stop Barkley, so I doubt Joe gets KOed here, perhaps put his ass once.

Calzaghe would win a very wide UD.

Toney's inconsistency wouldn't come into it as this is a fight between the best version of both fighters. Calzaghe is way overrated. Who has Calzaghe beaten? A faded Eubank and an super hyped 1 dimentional Jeff Lacey. Toney has been in the ring with far better quality fighters and is the greater skilled of the two. Toney would abuse Calzaghe for 8 rounds and take pity on him in the 9th to put him out of his misery.

This is the absurdity that we have to deal with.

I think Calzaghe would win, but Toney would make it very hard on him due to his iron chin and counter-punches on the inside. The fight would see some of the best infighting of the modern era, and would do well to have a British ref so we could actually see it without hearing "Break!" everytime the fighters got in close.

The volume, unorthodoxy and handspeed of Calzaghe's attack would pick up rounds (which many Americans would likely contend) early on, and in the later rounds Calzaghe would lure a Toney who was behind on the scorecards onto the front food. There, Calzaghe would counter an easy to hit Toney and secure the last three rounds clearly for a SD (the split is due to Eugenia Williams, who scored it 115-113 for Toney).

That's because you're biased and don't know what you're even talking about here in regards to this match up.

Yes I'm biased because I have a picture of James Toney in my avatar don't I? I am also British so I must be biased and love the American Toney out of national pride.
