Can any of you gimps help me with phones? I have to admit I'm a total noob with phones, I'm the owner of a brick. But I want to get involved with one of these smartphones. I'm feeling left out. Especially since Gaz and people have been raving about Android.
So I want an Android phone. From what I've researched it seems the Samsung Galaxy S2 is the best. But costly too. Is this fair? So can somebody knowledgable tell me about what phones might be just below the S2 that are a little more reasonably priced? What are the contenders? To be clear I still want something fucking good, I'll pay for the S2 if I have to but is there anything out there not too far off the S2? Just want to know my options. |

Ok let me get the bad stuff out the way first, since some of these things could be potential deal breakers.
Firstly and very importantly, battery life isn't the best, and I think the iphone edges it on battery power. If you are busy using the internet, music players, and a lot of apps, you will struggle to get a day's use out of it. That being said moderate use of these things, and you'll get a bit more. I think smart phones in general are big battery drains, but I find on the HD you do lose the juice quite quick. There is an software update that has just come out which many users are claimly vastly improves the battery life. I'm stil waiting for the update but it's around the corner. Secondly about updating OS softwate, Since every phone maker seem to have their own spin on google's Android OS, everytime google releases a new update, it needs to be tweaked and skinned by the phone makers and the operators cos some of them like to bundle their own crap on it too. This often results in updates being out of sync and delayed whilst networks are tinkering around with it before releasing it. On the plus point once you get the update its over the air and simple to install. About the app store, or Android Market as it's called, is not regulated so well, so you do find apps of not so great quality. But at the same time, the open nature of it means that non developers and smaller developers can make apps fairly easily now. On the HD, the HD video recording isn't the best, maybe a little worse off than the iphone video recorder but it does the job, just dont expect to get polished very HD looking video, thats all. That's basically it for the bad. As for the good stuff, there is so much. The phone is heavily customizable, you have 7 home screens, which you dont get with the iphone, and you can place many widgets and apps directly on the screen. You can also download themes and skins, to change the entire look of the OS. You can integrate stuff like facebook and twitter directly on screen and active. Also you can download custom music players, web browsers etc, which Iphone does not do. Most importantly you CANT play any flash content on an iphone so dont expect a pc like web experience. Also if you are not putting your mp3s through itunes, then forget about putting music files on your phone. Also tried to send a friend who has an iphone an mp3 and it wouldn't accept it!! Apple lock you out totally, if it's not through itunes, then you can fuck off. Also keep in mind that you cant take the battery out of the iphone and you cannot add extra storage. The Desire HD gives you 1gb internal but you can add as many Micro SD cards as you want! another bastard move from Apple! All in all mate the user experience on the Desire HD is stunning, I get my iphone 4 owning friends at work, envious when they play around with my phone and realize they cant do half the things I can, but they are stuck on lengthy contracts so cant do fuck all about it lol. They like to tell you they got the better apps, but these days it seems any apps the iphone got, Android phones like the HTCs and Samsungs, have the same apps plus more when it comes to multimedia. Ah also sound quality is fucking awesome with decent headphones, you got dolby surround sound on the HD, kicks ass. About the screen size, it's 4.3inches which is big for a phone, but more screen is the way to go now. It's still not so chunky surprisingly thin for a big phone. Bigger screen is great for viewing youtube for example and I like that when looking at ESB on the phone and there are videos posted, fight highlights, weigh ins etc, you can play them right off the page as you can on a pc. You cant with iphone, the video will just not display. Think I have covered most of it. End of the day it's your choice, but even some of the negative things about the HD, I still 110% back it as a brilliant handset. Also the follow up to the HD has been released, the HTC Sensation, and it's a powerhouse. If you can get your hands on this beast I would be one jealous fuck! lol. Well hope this helps |

TBH mate, I reseached this a few weeks ago when I was looking for a phone but only looked in to the price bracket that I wa willing to pay and the Galaxy S2 was nowhere near it!!!
The various HTC Desires always get good reviews and are a fair bit cheaper than the Galaxy. |

I was looking at the Desire HD as a cheaper option, 100 quid cheaper. But since i'm such a noob I don't really have a good appreciation of whether that 100 quid is worth saving or not. |

Are you sure didn't make a balls up buying that new Sensation? I mean its supposed to be HTC's answer to the S2 is it not, but from what I've read its not really better at much and costs the same
I'm still getting the impression from absolutely everywhere that the S2 is the nuts, every review site. The only negative seems to be some people don't like the plastic on the S2 but I don't think I'd be arsed about that particularly since I treat things well. There also seems to be Motorola Atrix which is a dual core too, seems to be among the best of the rest and on eBay is running at about 60-80 quid cheaper than the S2. Another thing...is there anything just about to come out that would affect the price of these things? |

I think the S2's big edge seems to be the screen compared to the rest is noticeably better and that kind of thing would be big to me I suppose more than certain little features. I mean if you're using these things for a lot of stuff the screen kinda matters.
