When I played we had a local "hardman" loon who used to follow us who would stand on the wing with a 6 pack of lager, 5-10 yards onto the pitch and just shout obcenities and get in the way of the opposition full back.

The best I played against was a lad called Luke Milner - HH might have heard of him. He was an animal of a loose forward, about 6'1'', but solid and quick too, when Bradford were dominant he was the lad they made most effort to sign. Unfortunately not long after he cracked a couple of bones in his neck and busted his shoulder, was told to pack it in. Thinking about it in the Leeds area I must have got to play against a shitload of top players. Carl Ablett was one that I didn't rate much, Scott Murrell too - who was probably regarded as the ''gun'' player at any trials that I was invited to. He didn't even have to turn up and he was picked, once at my expense after I got the better of him in a school game (for the only time I might add) and then he didn't show for the trials the week after. Lee Smith was always a special player, both with him and against him, I thought it would work for him when he left Leeds for Wasps (given that he's always been better at union) but he didn't settle, and since he came back up here a lot of good young kids have come through and he's on the outer. Shaun Edwards took him to one side a short time after Cipriani latched onto him (because Lee had recently broken up with an Emmerdale star) - thinking he had a showbiz pal obviously, basically saying ''ditch that fucker and you'll do alright here, he's trouble''. I'm glad I never played against them, because sometimes my mouth gets the better of me, those fuckers would have made short work of me I'm sure. |
