Computer games are a great way to not progress anywhere in life, without realizing. If I picked up one of those PC games that sucker you in I'd end up in a basement somewhere wanking all day and playing games, no doubt about it. Which is a really bad thing considering I've just bought a gaming laptop ![]()

I don't like the comparison of eras in football either due to advances in fitness, nutrition pitches and equipment I'd much prefer to see nowadays players cope in older times with all this and less protection.
On boxing all I would say is older boxers were fitter with my little knowledge on it. |

I can't be arsed, the debate has been going on strongly in the last few days (again) funnily enough.
Very few boxers of today would be at the top of the division in past era's IMO. The fact that fighters still gas within 12 rounds nowadays shows it's not all that, plus 24 hour weigh in's encourage weight cutting, which leads to less training time for development of skills. |

I'm not one for comparing era's myself but when i see some of fighters from back in day i do find myself wishing we could have fighters like them again. They just were natural born fighters. Lot of fighters nowadays are athlete's from different fields who fell upon sport. I think some of the conditioning work S&C coaches do is unfounded and based purely off philosophy or what they've heard. Seriously some of these guys shouldn't be anywhere near sport and fighters in general.
Look at Enzo's guy who had him carrying beer barrells... The sports become far more tactical IMO, and gone backwards in terms of technique. |

I know its dumbing down the argument a lot but I don't reckon being mechanically faster and stronger would make up for the technical experience of the guys who amassed hundreds of fights in their careers. When I look at videos I can see the argument for the "crudeness" of fighters prior to around 1920 but after that and certainly by the 1930s and 1940s the top fighters were up with modern fighters IMHO allowing for the differing rules, gloves, distances etc. |

Its not that sports science hasnt progressed its the way that athletes compete and train which has changed. They are now designed to fight 3 times a year and the cycle their training to be at a peak condition 2-3 times a year for a very short space of time. Go back 50-60-70 years and fighters were fighting all year at a different pace. Against different styles, the game has changed. Technique therefore has evolved a fighter that fights hundreds of times will be vastly more experienced in the nuances than 20-30 fight career fighters of today. Maybe the strength and conditioning wasnt the same but the conditioning they did was perfecly adequate if not more than enough for the era and the way they fighting. |

I agree Pad, I think athletes have improved over the years and I'm also sure boxers have improved athletically. I'm just not sure this translates into being "better" at fighting than the guys in days gone by given the different attitudes, lessened activity levels and the decreased amount of boxers in the talent pool.

I did actually like Sven though, problem is, he's been worse than dreadful since leaving England. |
