Then Johnson's prime must have lasted a couple days... And he didn't have a fight scheduled on those days.

Nice to see Jerry Quarry mentioned.

Glancing back through the thread, there are now 4 posters listing Smokin' Joe as their #1 favorite.

No surprises. The Classic appreciate the hard workers and the under appreciated the most I think. Whitaker, Duran, and Frazier. Their from the same cloth.

I like Quarry a lot too. He was a good fighter, could have made some dents in today's division.

Easy.

Golota was the one boxer I became interested in who helped me make the transition from casual fan into a die hard fan.

The first fight I ever saw was Hagler-Hearns when I was young (9 years old). After that, I used to watch boxing here and there. During the 80s, I mostly followed Tyson, I remember Hagler-Leonard, and throughout the early 90s, I had some idea what was going on in the heavyweight division but did not much care for anything else. I thought the Bowe-Holyfield fights were magnificent, and I followed the sport like a casual fan would.

I saw Golota fight Doc Nicholson on HBO's Night of the Young Heavyweights, and was happy to see a Polish heavyweight with decent skills.

Then came the Bowe fights.

After those, I more or less watched as much boxing as I could whenever I could.

For that reason, Golota is my personal favorite.

Nice story Rummy.

It's good to see picks outside of the status quo.

Thanks. I know Golota isn't exactly a popular answer, but he is the fighter who made me become more interested in the sport, for better or worse.
