I knew Corrales picked the wrong fighter before it started. You either have to be crazy or brave to have Clottey as your first fight after jumping up two weight divisions. One of the worst beatdowns in recent memory IMO.

I don't think that him getting beat on so badly had anything to do with the Castillo fight. I think that it was more so because he was at such a much higher weight. He had been draining down to 135 for years and as a result he was fighting guys that were a lot smaller than him. He picked a large, strong guy 2 weight classes above his best weight class. That is why he was beaten so badly.

Corrales was certainly a double sided coin .. Brave Warrior but also was convicted of spousal abuse .. A loyal fighter for Shaw but then signs w/ Golden Boy.. Then one year to the date of Corrales / Castillo I, from giving the performance of his life to drving mashed out on a motorcycle.

One thing that really must've upset him a week or two before his death was the fact he was vastly in debt and given everything of himself to this sport unnoticed .. Meanwhile he witnessed multi-million dollar sparring session... DLH / Mayweather.

I liked watching Corrales in the ring and wished he wouldn't have lost his life in that accident, but tying his depression to the Mayweather/DLH fight is a little much, don't you think? Corrales had every opportunity that Mayweather had to be a star; he just isn't as good as Floyd. Plus, Corrales money problems were mostly his own fault. He lost two years worth of fights and paydays because of going to jail for beating up his wife. If he was depressed about the shape his life was in, I doubt the DLH/Mayweather fight was part of the reason why.

Yeah it was hard to watch.

Taking on Clottey for his first fight at a new weight class i knew was a bad move.

I think i understand where your coming. The severity with which he beat his ex wife always made me think poorly of his anger management issues. Its not like he just slapped her. Only now i would even mention that because after he died it seemed people were trying to rewrite his history and it was and probably is a tender subject for people to talk about even though we can now all talk about Sonny Liston's demons without starting a arguement. I think the career ending beatdown Clottey gave him was more depressing for him than DLH/ May.

I think Castillo was ruined by a combination of age, the wars he had been in, and the abuse he had put his body through to make weight. The long layoff after the second Corrales fight didn't help, either. He looked very diminished in his first fight at 140 and looked shot from the start in the Hatton fight. (I'm not taking anything away from Hatton's victory.) I think it was a combination of things that affected Castillo, more so than the Corrales fights alone.

I agree, but look at what he was paid for that fight and what he took in terms of punishment always giving 100% and fighting with sheer will.. he never got the respect he deserved in terms of $. He was on the wrong side of the fence of 'Prize-fighter' .. whereas when DLH has no chance of winning he goes down on a poke in the ribs (if you can punch the canvas you can get up) and collects his check.

The DLH / Corrales contrast reminds me of 'Forest Gump' winning the Oscar over 'Pulp Fiction'!
