Default Where does Marciano rank all-time amongst the hws?

I have him ranked third. Sure, H2H he might be a little lower but I prefer ranking according to how a boxer performed in their era. He cleaned up the division beating the best available opponents usually knocking them out, never lost, gave rematches to Walcott, Charles, and Lastarza after competitive first bouts, always came prepared and acted like a champ in and out of the ring.

As for not having the stiffest competition, any other hw aside from Ali can have his resume picked apart. The only thing he lacks is a longer title reign like my #1 Ali and #2 Louis. I think had he fought and stopped Floyd Patterson, he would probably be entrenched at #3.

So where does he rank?

A ranking anywhere from 3 to 10 could be comfortably justified. Anything outside of that zone is going to require a good explaination.

He's #6 on my ATG list- all factors considered. Head-to-head, he'd be quite a bit lower. Outside the Top 10.

Top 5 for me.

His career is a study in perfecton. What I mean is, Rocky literallty had the perfect career. I'm sure every pro dreams of having a career like Rocky had.

He aligned himself with one of the best trainers in the business (Goldman) and one of the most powerful and had one of the most influential men in the sport (Weill) as manager.

He was allowed to learn his trade and make his share of mistakes outside of the prying eyes of big-time reporters by having his early fights in Providence, and only when he was ready did he step up into the spotlights with bigger fights at the Garden.

He became champion, made his money, and retired undefeated and financially very secure without being punchy or suffering any ill efects of his brutal trade.

About the only thing he could have done to be any more 'perfect' was win an Olympic gold medal, which he did not do.
Other than that, he had a perfect career.

He is in the elite club of heavyweights who dominated a definable era.

John L Sullivan (Not on most top 10 lists)
Jim Jeffries
Jack Johnson
Jack Dempsey
Joe Louis
Rocky Marciano
Muhamad Ali
Larry Holmes
Mike Tyson (arguably)
Lennox Lewis

Based on this it is dificult to make an argument for keeping him outside the top10. At the end of the day a solid resume delivered is worth a thousand fantasy match ups. We can speculate about whether this heavyweight or that heavyweight could have beaten him but the facts are that nobody did.

I have him at #13. I don't hate Marciano, I'm not one of these idiots that lives his life to run him down, I rate him as a great and dangerious fighter. Having 12 above you is not something to be ashamed of, or for his fans to get upset about, all the guys I have above him are ATG's. What Rocky had was amazing but he lacks variety. I think he would have been banged out by great punchers. I also think that great durable boxers with some power could do for him.

He is rank 4 on my list, behind Louis, Ali, and Johnson.

But now that I discover this new film of him, I thinking of bumping him to number 1.
