It didnt help that Gracie was about 50 years old.

4.7 Million Viewers Tune In To See First Ever UFC Title Bout On Spike TV
The first ever UFC title fight on Spike TV drew a staggering 4.7 million viewers on Saturday, September 8, making it the most watched UFC event ever and the most watched MMA event ever in North America. The “UFC 75” telecast emanating from the O2 Arena in London, England peaked at 5.6 million for the bout between UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and PRIDE champ Dan Henderson. The fight card drew more Men 18-34 and Men 18-49 than anything else on television, broadcast or cable on September 8, including heavy sports competition from college football on ABC and ESPN, NASCAR on ABC, and the U.S. Open Women’s Final on CBS. “We're very proud to have added to the rich history of sports in London with this watershed mixed martial arts event,” said Dana White, UFC President. “Not only did UFC 75 showcase the bout that unified the 205 lb Pride and UFC titles, it did so in front of a record breaking crowd at the O2 Arena in London, and in front of the largest U.S. audience to ever tune in to an MMA card during its Spike TV telecast.”

Audley Harrison vs. Danny Williams got 8 million viewers in the uk which is a massive audience per population of the UK compared to the UFC audience in the massive population of america! And who the hell wanted to see Audley Harrison fight!!!!! But UFC with all its hype gets a whopping 4.7 million whoopee lol

I don't know guys, I mean, 5 years ago would anyone have thought it was likely to have a free cable TV UFC show that garnered 4.7 million viewers?

Obviously MMA isn't ecclipsing boxing any time soon, but it certainly is growing and growing fast.

It's certainly a very healthy business, but consider that it was a title fight on a basic cable channel. Ask yourself what would have happened if Oscar vs Mayweather were shown on regular TV.

UFC is doing very, very well, and it might actually be healthier than boxing, but it's impossible to compare this kind of event to anything that boxing has done because ESPN2 doesn't exactly show marquee fights. They also don't promote them.

It was a free fight. Put it on PPV and watch how many people don't buy it.

Oh and the fight made De La Hoya vs Mayweather look like Gatti vs Ward.

Boxing fans are TIRED of MMA promoting itself simply by the antagonistic nature of MMA taking over/better than boxing.

Why is it MMA fans continually find there ways to boxing forums to discuss this BULLSHIT?? Let me know when you see my tag in an MMA forum

I dont hate or object to MMA, I hate and object to the bullshit rationale used in the promotion of such Talk about the merits of the sport!! Why not promote MMA over the fake ass WWE which at least has 'ground game"???

MMA's promoters and powers that be, think its success, but the more they do it?? The greater the backlash that will occur between fans of both sports, WHEN FANS OF BOTH SPORTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO ENJOY BOTH, if they so choose.
