Default Why didnt monzon ever go up to lightheavyweight?

He was in talks to fight conteh but it never happend, monzon vs foster is the best fight of the 1970's not to happen. Monzon was known to have to cut alot of weight to make middle he might of been stronger and more powerful at his more natural weight at lightheavy, to me monzon looked a bigger man the conteh and galidnez

Monzon, whatever his outside the ring life was like, was exceedingly smart inside the ring...and that included knowing where he was most suited, divisionwise...he was uniquely suited to middleweight...and stayed there wisely.

Love the avatar Cotto, haven't seen that pic before surprisingly since I have about 400 Monzon images on my computer.

No light heavyweight would fight him. Spinks is on record saying "I once saw a picture of Monzon, and before I could control myself I filled my pants..."

Yeah, cause Spinks, a rookie in 1977, would fight Monzon right?

Same as with Hagler, I believe he knew he would probably lose at light heavyweight against Foster, just like Marvin did with Spinks, so they just stayed in the weight class they could dominate in.

I think Conteh would've beaten him. Has a great jab himself could mix things up, would've been the bigger man.

As for Hagler, MW was perfect for Monzon.

Monzon is my all time favorite fighter as well. I am not even from Argentina, but I try to pattern my style like his. But I am also smaller than him, that is where I get my name from.

Monzon stayed to where he was best suited.

Am not to shocked about spinks saying that, just looking at monzon you can see the guy is cold man.

If you are a career Middleweight, why fight at Light Heavyweight?

Acts by fighters today like this, help ruin the sport for me now a days.

Why cannot a fighter with a potential stay in a division and dominate it for a few years anymore?

Fighters seem to me to be a little lazy in this age, not prepared to control their weight to stay in a division.

Sure fighters used to move up in the 70s (and earlier), but they generally did this on a sound foundation, of a long career at a lighter weight.
