Why didnt monzon ever go up to lightheavyweight? - Page 3

Monzon was one of the very greatest middle weights of all time... But ascending to light heavyweight, particularly during THAT era would have been a dangerous proposition. Not saying that he couldn't have wrestled a belt away from someone, but remaining at his best weight was probably a wise and sound decision.

The middleweight division was the elite division still, In Monzon's era he enjoyed the advantages he had at 160,the 160lb title was a prized title and he had no problem making weight....Dick Tiger and Jose Torres moved up from middleweight to win a title but Monzon was a dominant champ at middleweight and the money was good. A king is a King in his own kingdom and Monzon lived and ruled at 160

Chicken of the tougher, bigger guys.

Beating guys again after you've dominated them already is pretty boring. Move up, don't cherry pick guys like JNap to beat up or fight guys again to pad your record.

Could have done a lot more to break the top 3 middleweights ever. But, that's Ray, Harry and Marvin's place to argue over

I think the bigger question is why can't guys from recent times hold their weights their whole careers?

Look at a guy like Camacho. Terrific amatuer career and a great prospect. Turns pro and immediately rises to the top in a real tough division full of top fighters. Why can't a guy like that be held to the Monzon standard and fight his whole career at 130? How's the career turn out then?

Me, I think far more fighters benefit holding their weight than continuing to put the pounds on.

Why would a natural middleweight move up from a division that was active and he was dominant....Middleweights were always the elite division

from the 80's until Today the heavyweights can gain unlimited weight and it showed up in the ring...The Kiitschko's are Big men 6"61/2 and 6"71/2 and weigh in about 240-250 and that is similar to being 6"2 1/2 and 215lbs or 6"1 and 190lbs its called fitness but even the Klitschko's carry more upper body muscle than most but are fit men...Heavyweights years ago maintained weight...Joe Louis weighed 230+ for an exhibition vs Nino Valdes (who he ko'd in 1 rd.) but for his next fight got back down closer to 210
