Default Protein Shakes - Do they make you urinate more?

Hello everyone, this is an issue that has been bothering me for a little while now.

When I take protein shakes I seem to pee alot more than I usually do, more than 10 times a day quite often, sometimes up 2 or 3 times a night.

This appears to cease to be the case when I stop taking the shakes.

However, there is seemingly a dearth of websites or evidence linking the two.

I'm just wondering if anyone can shed any light on this issue?

Not in my experience.

However when I work out I drink a ton of water and then I am urinating all the time. Its probably just all the water.

i remember someone told me, i think it was my gym teacher a year or 2 ago, well he said that those protein powders that you mix with shakes or whatever, that you just piss it all out and that they dont work, so maybe if you are taking more of the powder its making you piss more. but i was wondering also, do they actually work?

NOTHING to do with that.
They make me and a few other people a little thirstier and hungrier, so you might be pissing out that extra liquid.

Protein shakes can be useful, but if I'm completely honest they are in no way a necessity and a solid diet is far far far far superior. I have friends who say that a good diet and plenty of food are superior to any supps or steroids they have tried (and not just tried, like used for years).

Excess protien is passed through urine, there is only so much protien that your body can process so it is better to have it in small installments. Not sure why exactly it would make you urinate more, I thought it would just increase the protien content. I seem to remember the same thing happening to me though now you mention it.

Yes, I usually have to urinate more because I'm also upping my water intake in order to get the protein shakes down since it has to be broken down and excreted out of the body.

Surprised you didn't mention the unfortunate flatuence that comes with it xD

Thank you for all the feedback guys.

I'm not taking that much (I once did but I've scaled right back and tried for a solid diet as Mr Small suggests.

I only have one whey protein shake a day, but I blend it in with raspberries, blueberries and blackberries to make a mixed berry smoothie.

I also drink a fair bit of water with it. So I suppose this could be a factor?

I must add that it isn't painful or anything. I just need to pee more!

And yes Jag of Tory....they can make you fart more!

Any extra liquid intake will make you piss more. Thats only logical. And do yourself a favor and ditch the shakes. The quality of protein is poor and isnt absorbed as well by the body as hard food. Protein shakes are nothing more than an expensive placebo in my eyes.

Is your piss clear? If so good job. If not drink more water. Yellow urine means high ammonia and too much toxins.

Thank you for the advice Scurla.

What would you suggest eating post workout say as a replacement for the shakes? I was always led to believe that whey protein was best in this respect, so any advice here would be most welcome.

And yes the piss is clear!

Its shite. Its full up with too much crap. Go home and have a chicken sandwich with wholemeal bread. I do them on my George Formby. Tastes better and a much better source of protein and good carbs.

beatboxer protein is the most overrated nutrient out there, i see guys in my club taking shakes after a 2 hour boxing session and its pointless, i dont supplement protein and dont go out of my way to eat extra protein during the day, my only large amounts of protein is in my main dinner through fish preferably or chicken and beef, a balanced diet is the best option, because you are constantly urinating means your body is not using the protein and the liquid consumed with it, if you are bodybuilding then protein is required a lot more than usual, but if your boxing i recommend you ditch them altogether, your body needs carbs and sugar after a hard session to replace enery stores and limit the amount of time your body spends dehydrated, the quicker you rehydrate the quicker you start recovering, i have a smoothie with oils and my body is recieving carbs/sugar, nutrients and fats its like a meal which is what you need after a session, the rate at which your body recovers between the 30 mins directly after a seesion is 5 times greater than normal, if you want your protein i recommend a shake with carbs, or something like a weight gainer as this has everything in it, vitamins, nutrients, fats carbs and protein, limit it to 500 calories though, a few scoops of weight gainer can bang up to 2000 cals, another great little supplement is maximuscles viper, great for rehydrating and imo the best recovery drink, when my training is getting tough i use this and guess what it has no protein
