I use it a lot inside. It's easy to hide and when thrown at the right distance relatively safe. As others stated it often clears the path for an uppercut through the middle as they pull back their elbow for defense. There's no liver on that side so it's not the most effective punch (I've never been troubled by one), but it can set things up.

i use it alot
I'm a tall guy but when i get my guy going i like to stand in mid range and bang the body which works really well. i tend to use the right hook as leverage on my left hook to the body. However i have recently started using it to bang the solar plexus which really hurts people and then i follow up with my left to the ribs. |

thats a hard punch imo. If you like to fight inside your opponant i guess it's more suitable and easy.
I've seen bad things happen to people caught with that punch, very respectable shot if you can throw it well. |

You could spin your opponent with the left hand (fake hook behind the shoulder) and then throw the right hook downstairs. I know it's not really common and perhaps not what he meant but it is possible if one of the boxers is positioned in an angle.

Do you side step? Rear hooks are still the 'dark side' of all punches regardless of stance, try etching your head to the right (look there) then step inward left and throw the right to the body as you strafe across -for some reason it takes their attention away from the punch. It is a very punishing blow to land. If they buckle, you get a free lead hook to the side or back of their head. Works well against those in the same stance.
