A friend of mine was a sparring partner for Darius Mickaleski in Germany and traveled with Bryd when he was fighting Vlad Klitschko...He said he never saw anyone hit the bag Like Vlad, he said Vlad folded the bag in half with a hook... this kid trained in a lot of top NY gyms and seen many heavyweight hit the bag and Train, Tyson included but was amazed by Vlad's force

I still like that story Ron Lipton told on one of these forums, about how frightening an old diabetic 50+ year old Tony Galento was hitting the bag in the same gym as him. Ron swore Galento's power demonstrated on that bag was as great or greater than anyone he witnessed before or since, and he's seen the likes of Frazier, Foreman, Liston.

Any links to that vid? I also can't find that prefight vid from Marciano-Walcott preparations. Jersey Joe showed there some magic with his footwork.

Yes, Foreman's power looks awesome on the heavybag. But look at the technique he's employing. He basically just squares up on it, plants his feet and whales away, whereas Rocky and Sonny employ some real technique with it, treating it as if it were an oppenent. George treats it as if it is what it is- a stationary object that's not going to move or hit him back. Would Rocky and Sonny look similarly impressive (power-wise) if they just stopped, spead their feet and whaled away like Foreman does? I don't see why not. |

I got to really appreciate Marciano as time went by and the more I learned about the sport and the more I spoke to some great and smart boxing people...
Marciano had some special element inside him, Charlie Goldman did a brilliant job bringing out the diamond out of the coal and Marciano trained like something not human, he was obsessed. Remember the guy ran like a marathon runner, hit a 280lb heavy bag (unheard of) and had a lot of other weird training methods like underwater punching and Quick release bolder throwing. Marciano was a freak at 5"11 and 188lbs but he could hit as hard as any man who ever lived and kept coming... I would hate to share a ring with Rocky, he had an unorthodox style, threw some oddball rhythm breaking shots...and never stopped coming...I would not like to share a ring with Liston or Foreman unless I had the defense of a Jimmy Young or Ali or the legs and speed of Gene Tunney or the chin of either of the 3 ( all had excellent whiskers) thing with Marciano is he never got tired, never gave up trying, and had late power and that is a tough 3 elements to defeat |
