anyone old enough to remember him ?
he was forced to retire cause of a damaged eye or something {i think}...but he was an unbeaten british heavyweight champ at the time... i remember him being light looking for a heavyweight, but not much more.. anyone got any memories of him...or where he is now ? Yup remember him well. British and commonwealth champ.
The british scene looked to be shaping up nicely back then. Bruno was already big. It looked like Mason and Notice would be a big domestic clash there for a while... then Notice had to retire and some Canadian upstart derailed Gary's career a bit. Oddly I think Mason had eye trouble too. Good days. |

I regarded him a a better prospect than Mason, who was disposing of corpses while Horace was going to war with Hughroy Currie for the British title (and also winning the Commonwealth title). Mason usually took on Notice's 'afters'.
He was on the verge of the world rankings when his eye problems sadly occurred. Today, he looks very well and is living and working in London, I believe. |

when you think of gary mason and the fact that he had only one loss to lewis...he wasnt too bad was he ?
the only time i seen a boxer get stopped by the ref while he was on the attack with his man on the ropes... not saying for a moment that i disagree with the stoppage....just always thought it was one for trivia quizes and the like. |

Mason was a good puncher but it would have been interesting to know how he and Notice got on in sparring (although Lawless was not into gym wars). Notice was a slow burner but he was beginning to come through when his career was sadly curtailed. He was a better amateur than Mason (stopped by Daniel T. Moul while Notice won the 1983 ABA heavyweight title in brutal fashion).

Gloucester's Harold Hylton. I watched a strong GB team get absolutely murdered by the USA in an amateur international in early 1983 in London. We only had one winner: Notice, and he stopped the American in the first.

Canada's Willie DeWitt beat him in the final of the 1982 Commonwealth Games at heavyweight (in about eight seconds). DeWitt could have been something special as a 'white' heavyweight pro but was badly mismanaged and now works as a lawyer.

The clutching would come back to haunt Akinwande, of course. |
