Mike Tyson as he was like nothing i had ever seen at heavyweight. I thought he would maybe be the best ever.

Tommy Hearns was my favourite. I loved watching him for his punching power, and his fights with Leonard and Hagler are some of my favourite bouts ever, even if he did lose both of them.

I remember a 1990 article in a boxing magazine, Tyson v the best, and they just about picked him over ****ing everybody. But I remember, bizarrely, they picked Jack Johnson to beat him.

Before if it's the article I'm thinking of.

So many fantastic fighters in the 80's it's impossible for me to pick just one.

actually jack johnson would have a good style to beat tyson... just add him a couple of pounds and he had the strength, the stamina, the brain, the deffence ,the skill to frustrate tyson, johnson was very rare for his era

Most of my favorites are from that decade. Sanchez for sure, but a lot of my faves came to prominence in the 70's and continued that into the 80's, such as Chacon, Hagler, Saad Muhammad, Arguello........

Overall Tyson. He was the embodiment of 'the man' and for a young teenage kid he was the perfect sporting idol.

But there were many others...Hearns, Hagler, Brian Mitchell, Wilfredo Gomez, Azumah Nelson, Arguello etc. I HATED Ray Leonard back then, but I like him now.

Just after he crushed Spinks, I remember an article (forget from which mag) that pitted him against the legends...only Ali and Liston were given a chance to beat him.

Duran and Holmes. Both had tremendous skill and a determined grittiness to win at all costs. Duran did embarrass himself with "no mas" but he made up for it against Davy Moore when they said he was old and past it.
