Seems a bit of a shame. If only he had a bit of pop. Guy was dynamite.

Not like he underachieved though. Beat an ATG for the title (in Japan) defended against great contenders like Castillo (at the fabulous forum) Sakurai (in Japan) and Rudkin (at home, slightly iffy, but admittedly could've gone either way) and picked up a win at 135 against future champ' Guts as well as a few more decent wins pre/post title.

I think his style was all that because of his lack of pop. If he had a dig we'd be looking at a very intimidating fighter indeed!!!

I don't think Rose's chin is as bad as people think. He could get knocked down, flash knockdowns really and at the top level but he always got up and fought back. Even in the Olivares fight he took some massive bombs flush. He was never the same fighter post Olivares and part of that was his lifestyle along with hard fights at the top level.

The lack of power was probably the key weakness.

Always tough to fight in such a classic-box-punching style when you don't hit well.

Fair but the stats don't lie; you'd have to suspect that a few of the very best would've had him down. But pre-Olivares he wasn't 'chinny' in the respect you'd bank on him getting stopped, no, but definitely droppable.

Actually, okay he was stopped a few times post Olivares (notably Cruz anywhere near his best) but Guts and Numata, the latter especially who could generate some force by throwing himself into a Shoryuken) didn't get close to hurting him really, not from what we know of the former anyway.

Must get round to uploading Rose-Numata actually.....

I agree with more pop he would of been a lot more formidable. Have you seen the Gattellari fight?

I think I put it in here. Had Harada outworking him throughout I think. I know he got hurt a few times (in the last round as well IIRC) but I remember him hiring Medel then leaning against him on the ropes a fair bit trying not to fall into too many dangerous traps. Not boring, and he got hit a bit but I remner Harada getting much the better of it.

I might watch Rose-Harada again. I can't believe how good Rose looked. Harada was fighting well, but he was well beaten in the end. I haven't seen too many better displays, honestly.

I like Harada too so I wasn't expecting to enjoy the fight, but if you're a boxing fan you just have to admire the skill on show. Not just on the part of Rose, but also Harada who did play his part and had some success, albeit limited success. You have to watch it.

Edit: Someone noted on the YT version that Rose reminded them of Robinson. I have to to agree.

I watched Robinson-Maxim and Robinson-Graziano at my girlfriend's flat earlier. Amazing respect between the two at the end of the second bout.

Graziano: "I have to say, Ray is a great fighter. I wanted to see just how good. He's the greatest fighter I've ever fought. And he's a wonderful guy too. A credit to the sport."
Commentator: "You're one of the greatest hitters of our times--"
Robinson (interrupting): "...of ALL times!"
Commentator: "...Did you feel you ever hurt Ray?"
Robinson: "I can tell you he did"
Graziano: "Well, I hit him with some shots, but I finally met my master tonight."
