Default Has there ever been a world champion pro boxer from India and/or of Indian ancestry?

Has there ever been a world champion pro boxer from India and/or of Indian ancestry? Can you even think of any notable Indian fighters? Any Indian fighters at all even?

I was just wondering because I cannot find one and I cannot recall one. Maybe I'm blanking on some obvious name but I can't find anything on the web. It seems odd, considering the massive population. Any folks from India have some input on this subject? Is it just not really followed in India? Not legal? Even if it weren't, I'd think there would be at least one or two fighters who left India to fight pro and were recognized. Plenty of Cubans have done it. I figured it would be best on the classic forum because, let's face it, typically more serious fans that care about the scope of boxing's history here. Thanks for any input, all.

Ill start you off with this thread.

To my knowledge there have been no Indian world champs...As mentioned in the other thread its a culture thing but it must be noted that the Indian amateur programs seems to be gradually getting better results.

There could be someone of light skinned Jamaican heritage that had indian heritage, but you'll be struggling to find out their heritage. I wonder what Mike McCallum's heritage is

Given e enormous number of people from India who settled in other British colonies during the days of the Raj I think that there simply must be sombody.

Not one. There has been a bronze Olympic medal winner from India. That is as far as they have advanced in boxing.

Khan is as close as you'll get.

His family come from Rawalpindi, which was part of India till 1947 (I think) so he's essentialy of Indian ancestry.

In fact India has only won one gold medal in the history of the Olympic games.

I would have thought that one of the African champions might have some Indian ancestry.

The British Empire moved a lot of people between India and the African colonies.

I know there was a female amateur boxer from India and she won a lot of competitions, can't remember her name but I'll try to find it. It is surprising with a population so big that more boxers haven't come through. As said before it’s more to do with the culture most kids prefer cricket or even wrestling although their wrestling often differs from Olympic wrestling. They do a lot of Pehlwani. I'm half Indian and can't think of any pros they seem to be doing better in the commonwealth games in recent years.
