I don't know if Chavez could have made 126 by the time he was a world class fighter. That would have been quite a stretch.

I posted this match-up at 130 a couple years ago, but had little response if I remember correctly.

I think this fight would have been a war. Chavez threw shorter punches, and very few can win by taking the fight to Chavez. I would not be surprised to see Chavez get a late stopage, but I have enough respect for Nelson to say he goes the distance.

I wish you better in regards to responses than what I had. This is a fabulous match-up. I don't know if people are afraid of rubbing others the wrong way, or what.

At 126 chavez was only about 70% of what he would become he was still kind of green although already a very good fighter Chavez would lose a close competetive decision. At 130 Chavez would win no doubt he was at about 90% if the fight was a 15 rounder Chavez might stop him late. If it went 12 id go with Chavez by a close but convincing decision 115-112. I think Chavez's best weight was Lightweight and hed beat up Azumah at 135

I always went against the grain and thought Nelson could win this one. Granted, Nelson did have his share of troubles with Martinez, Suarez, etc. at 130, but then Chavez had his hands full holding off LaPorte(which I thought could've gone either way) and Lockridge.

Shame these two basically just missed each other, although Nelson was always eying this fight.

Well like i mentioned earlier I dont think Chavez was at his peak yet,Lockridge was competetive but I thought Chavez won convincingly, the Laporte fight was pretty close but i had Chavez. Remember that Azumah got a gift against Fenech. Went 1-2-1 against Leija should have been 1-3(Leija deserved the win) and the 1st Ruelas fight could have gone either way, but no shame in that cause i think Ruelas and Leija were unerrated fighters. Bottom Line looking at there resumes and tapes(most important) I think Chavez would have taken him at JL

But by the time those fights rolled around, Nelson was at the same stage in his career as Chavez when he lost to Randall - and perhaps even more faded than that.

Good point But id say Chavez was slightly more past it.

One of those that got away... It's hard not to go with the bigger man. Nelson had more to his game but Chavez had enough to beat out a close decision.

Wow! I hate to pick against Nelson, but I don't think he would pull this off...Prhaps over 12, but even then he would have to be almost perfect in the way he took the fight to Chavez as well as how he avoided the damage Chavez would be throwing his way...I take Chvaez, as much as it pains me to do so.
