From The Times Dispatch, dated July 7 1910, from an article entitled, "Johnson Willing To Meet Langford".
"For half an hour, Johnson was given the greatest friendly demonstration he has seen since [The Jeffries fight a few days earlier]. A crowd of nearly 5,000 including 1,000 coloured soldiers of the ninth cavalry from Fort D. A Russell almost mobbed the champion's private car which was attatched to the Overland Limited on the Union Pacific, the crowd greeting the champion with wide yells and the wave of hats. Flowers were showered on him and the crowd forced it's way to Johnson's car to shake hands with him. A number of women in the crowd fainted as a result of the crush and were taken into Johnson's car." As a sidenote, John L Sullivan was also on the train, though it's not clear that he was in Johnson's private car. |

Ah, right. Johnson had said that he was willing to meet Langford, but demanded a $20,000 side bet. Langford's reply was that he would fight Johnson anywhere, anytime...but he wanted 2-1. In other words, he wanted to kick up 10k to Johnson's 20k. This round to Johnson as far as posturing goes, for a change admittedly.
