What does Barney Ross fighting to long have to do with his single handedly saving a life during the second world war? Or single handedly defeating a Japaneese unit (9-12 men depending upon what you read)? Or overcoming the heroin addiction that resulted from his morphine addiction which he suffered after treatment for war wounds sustained on the front line? Or his turning even that heroin addiction into a positive going on to work with underprivalidged kids and addicts? How is it relevant at all?

Muhammad Ali is not the right answer. He did a whole lot for a lot of people. And definitely made you proud to be black in America, but he wasn't the greatest person in boxing.

I suppose, though, it depends on how the word is phrased. Is it the greatest person in boxing, or are we asking for the greatest person who was a boxer? Two completely different questions in my book. The first, is more about what you do for boxing and how you inspire and what message you carry out. The former is just about being a great person that happens to be a boxer.

Ali might be the first. However, for the latter I'll go with Basilio and Joe Louis. Both refused doing anything for the Mob. In fact, Basilio was referred to as the courageous one for his assertiveness to not be involved with MOB activities. He was a great guy and a class act. Not perfect though, definitely had no love for SRR.

I don't know what you mean when you say the Greatest person in Boxing, but the warmest, gentlest, and kindest fighters I could name are probably Alexis Arguello, Joe Louis, and Orlando Canizales.

For me it's Rocky Marciano. He was never in any kind of serious trouble, reportedly never refused a kid an autograph, and seemed like a truly nice person. This doesn't mean he didn't have his flaws, he obviously had a temper, but he is still definitely one of the best role models out there.

Wladimir and Vitali seem to do a lot of under-publicized charity work. They're quite serious about it and I think they really are great all-around guys. Friends of the elderly Schmeling by the way. Nobody mentioning Vernon Forest either? The guy started his own charity and was reportedly a very good, big-hearted fellow. All honorable mentions.

Then, of course, there was LaMotta. Everybody said he was just a swell guy to be around...Unless he tried to beat you, rape you, murder you or rob you, or curse you out. But other than that, he was a peach from what I hear.
