I think Quarry wins by knockout in eight rounds. Can't really explain it other than the fact that I think he may be a better puncher.

Fitz COULD ccut Quarry, beat him down, K.O him, but as the footage of Fitz vs Corbett did not impress me that much (Corbett in particular) I'd go for Quarry, who I've seen more of and know more about, to stop Fitz within ten.

Let's not forget though, that Fitz has HIS gloves (and Quarry was hittable) and Jerry uses whatever he wants. This is clearly in Fitz's favour.

To be fair, I'm not certain that Mike Quarry doesn't beat a light-heavy Fitz. I think the times had changed too much, although I take into account Fitz's toughness and the fact that such an old fighter would be very, very awkward for a fighter with supposed 'modern' technique.

Quarry's problem was with guys that were bigger and heavier than himself with good boxing skills: Machen and Ali. Or someone like Frazier who was also slightly heavier and a bbulldog Quarry could not keep off. Fitz was a vicious puncher but Quarry would finally have a size and weight advantage for a change. I envision a crowd pleasing fight all the way with Quarry breaking down Fitz and finally ending things about round 7 or so.

Quarry KO 7 Fitz

Where would you see Jimmy Ellis fitting in here?

Ellis and Fitz are polar opposites in styles. Also, Quarry fought the Ellis fight with a broken back. I think Quarry's greedy father and trainer refused to cancel the fight which they obviously should have or at least postponed it for awhile.

There are varying accounts of how it happened. I think the one that stuck was Quarry falling or diving into a pool. Another rumor was that he was in a bar brawl. But his back was definately broken.

Quarry is certainly is better boxer. Enough footage of Fitzsimmons remains to verify this assertion. At his prime, Quarry was creative and destructive in his combinations whereas Fitz was more a counter one punch or two punch guy. Sure, Fitz could KO the likes of Maher and Corbett, but the more I look at those guys I realize they were all shit. Butterbean could have ruled in those years.
