Bobick decisioned Stevenson a year earlier, at the Pan American Games. Stevenson had massively improved his game since then.

In fairness to Bobick, he entered the 1972 Stevenson fight with one of his eyes half-closed. That's because a few days earlier, Bobick had won a hard fought decision over the Soviet heavyweight.

An irony here is that at the 1972 games, the three best amateur heavies involved were Bobick, Stevenson, and the Soviet (I don't remember his name). Sadly, all three guys fought each other in the opening rounds of the games, which meant that two of the three were eliminated and ineligible to win a silver or bronze medal. That's the luck of the draw in amateur tournaments, I guess.
