another good Kaylor fight

With a better chin, Kaylor could have been a very good middleweight, though he wasn't up to much when he moved up to 168.

I think i've mentioned this in the past, but compare Kaylor(or Gumbs) as a standup boxer-puncher to similarly styled Pavlik and Kely's status as a hyped P4P man as a middleweight champion.then consider Kaylor was seen as a borderline world class/upper echelons of Euro title level kind of fighter in the early-mid eighties and you see how much the middleweight division has fallen off in recent years, Hopkins aside.

yeh definitly Mante the Middleweight division was packed and Kaylor, Sibson, Lee etc.. very all fringe contenders and good fighters.

A good article. I remember the nasty undertones going into the fight and wanted Christie to win to shut up the thuggish element supporting Kaylor.

The thing is, this fight was BIG news at the time. Sadly I can't imagine a British Title Eliminator creating the same buzz nowadays. Unless perhaps if it was Nick Griffin against Mark Steel.

True, but not many a title eliminator has a pre fight street brawl, and lets be honest, many supporters of Kaylor that night, were perhaps the sort that boxing does not need, much like the Minter fans that Boom Boom attracted to the Hagler fight.

I am sure Griffin watched that one with glee.

Errol had all the talent needed - if left alone to compose and execute - it all fell apart somewhat under sustained pressure - Kaylor may not of been as naturally gifted as Errol, but had that "you'll have to Nail me Down" Spirit ! - he did a similar thing with big punching Roy Gums, getting off the fool to win.

I've sometimes wondered who might of won out of Errol Christe and Billy Knight - two very smooth boxing punchers who cracked under pressure - A flip of a Coin affair ?

I figured Errol was back to some form going into the Watson fight. And although I do not think he would win, I thought he would ask Watson a few questions...
