Default Power: Jersey Joe Walcott v. Max Schmeling

Max “Black Uhlan of the Rhine” Schmeling
Fights – 70
Stoppage Victories – 40
KO Percentage – 57.14

Jersey Joe Walcott
Fights – 71
Stoppage Victories – 32
KO Percentage – 45.07
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Some Notable Stoppage Victories

Max Schmeling

Steve Hamas – stopped once in 41 fights by Schmeling
Young Stribling – stopped once in 256 fights by Schmeling
Johnny Risko – stopped three times in 121 fights. Once by Schmeling, once by Tony Musto in his last fight, and once by Chuck Wiggins in an early fight. Went 12 rounds with Gene Tunney, 10 with Max Baer, 15 with Jack Sharkey and 10 with George Godfrey.
Walter Neusel – stopped 6 times in 90 fights.
Mickey Walker – stopped 6 times in 119 fights. Went 10 rounds with Paulino Uzcudan, 10 rounds with Bearcat Wright and 15 with Jack Sharkey.
Joe Louis – stopped twice in 69 fights, once by Schmeling, once by ATG puncher Marciano in Louis' very last fight. Louis fought many, many good punchers.

Jersey Joe Walcott

Johnny Shkor – stopped 4 times in 51 fights. Notable because it took Marciano 6 rounds to TKO Shkor, but Walcott only one to KO him.
Harold Johnson – I don't know the circumstances surrounding this KO. Was it legitimate or not?
Olle Tandberg – only stopped once 30 fights by Walcott.
Curtis Sheppard – stopped 5 times in 87 fights.
Elmer Ray – stopped 7 times in 104 fights.
Ezzard Charles – stopped 7 times in 119 fights. Walcott scored a clean one-punch KO. Charles went the distance with, or beat, good punchers like Rocky Marciano, Rex Layne, Bob Satterfeild, Joe Louis, Archie Moore.

Common opponents.

Joe Louis – Walcott was able to drop Louis a few times in their two fights, though the version he fought wasn't as good as the one that Schmeling fought. Schmeling was able to hurt Louis more and was able to keep him down.

Steve Dudas – they both stopped Steve Dudas in the 5th. Schmeling by KO, Walcott by TKO. Schmeling seems to have caught Dudas closer to him prime, they fought in the middle of Dudas' career when he was coming off of four consectutive wins. Walcott was Dudas' last fight and he was TKO'd one fight before that one by Tami Mauriello.

Who couldn't they stop?

Max Schmeling fought 39 rounds with Paulino Uzcudan and couldn't stop him, though I've read he came close in their 15 round fight. Jack Sharkey remained on his feet against Schmeling in 19 rounds of fighting between them. Uzcudan had an iron jaw, and it took the greatest HW puncher of all time, Joe Louis, to break it in Uzcudan's last fight. Sharkey was an all time great heavyweight who was only stopped anywhere close to his prime by Jack Dempsey and Primo Carnera.

Jersey Joe Walcott was unable to put away Joey Maxim in 30 rounds of fighting. Maxim had a great chin that was only broken once, by the fierce punching Curtis “Hatchetman” Sheppard. 26 rounds of fighting between Walcott and Joe Louis resulted in Louis getting dropped three times, but Walcott wasn't able to put him away. Louis is, of course, one of the top 2 greatest HW's of all time, and was only ever stopped anywhere close to his prime by Schmeling.

Power was nearly the same, but in different places................... Walcott had a harder left-hook, while I think Schmeling's right-cross was his bread and butter......... In terms of boxing, I gotta go with Walcott there........ But Schmeling was very capable............ A great dream fight for sure........... However, Walcott was probably more talented and athletic......... Yet Max Schmeling was no slouch....... A good pairing to be made in heaven or hell........ I'm willing to travel.........

Nice effort

Going by all the data you provided you have to go with Max I think.

Schmeling was a terrific right hand puncher and Walcott had surprising power as well ... very comparable ...

I think I'm in agreement with Bodhi and Mendoza. From what I gathered, Schmeling has more impressive stoppage wins over more durable opposition. Add on his higher KO percentage and his better results against what little common opposition they had, and I think Schmeling was the better/more powerful puncher by a little.

Jersey Joe had power in both hands but Schmeling's right was better.

I see them both as being part of a largley extinct breed of fighter, e.g. deffensive counterpunching heavyweights with genuine knockout power.

Walcott was more accurate a puncher I think. Like others said, Max had a better right. Walcott had a better left and good power in both hands. Very comparable.

Wow what a great matchup this would have been! I think Walcott would probably take the decision but if Schmeling lands that big right hand a few times?

Bloody interesting thread and matchup.

Both use cagey standpoints in order to draw their opponents into their best shots. Walcotts left was a thing of beauty but I'd say Schmelings right was harder.

Any outcome is feasible.

Good match-up both power counter punchers. Walcott was a more acurate puncher and had 2 fisted power, remember he dropped Louis 3 times with right hands. KO'd Charles with a hook and dropped Marciano with a hook. Max had an acurate and powerful right hand. JJWalcott had the better movement. Close but comfortable Decision win by Jersey Joe 8-6-1 9-6 8-7 all 3 judges for Walcott

It took me a while to find one, all the others were of him getting KO'd by Louis. It took me a while to find the Walcott pic, too. All the others were of him getting KO'd by Marciano. Poor guys.
