I agree with that but surely if the argument is you need to beat the man to be the man Manny needs Floyd just as much as Floyd needs Manny?

Anyway i guess my point is that the winner of SSM and FMJ is #1

floyd has a chance to become no. 1 but he didnt take that chance because his father told him that he shouldnt fight pac..so he demanded an olympic style drug testing to get out of the fight..pac waited too long just to fight floyd..

We had this discussion in another thread recently.

The concept of a linear champion is that you are the champion until you lose. Because, however, champions retire or leave the division permanently before they lose, there has to be some mechanism of re-establishing the lineage. IMO, if someone announces themselves to be leaving the division or retiring, then the title should be considered vacant then. If they later change their mind and the vacancy has not been resolved by that point, then they should be considered still champion. Why not? They are active fighting in the division and have not been beaten. Otherwise the entire point of linearship is corrupted.

If Kelly Pavlik has a hard fight next time and afterwards is interviewed ringside and announces his retirement, then the next day changes his mind, he wouldn't be linear middleweight champion anymore?

I agree. It's a debatable topic. But we're not discussing the lineal championship, we're discussing p4p. The p4p spot is not vacant, nor was it when Floyd returned.

Not sure what you're discussing, but the discussion you joined involved debate as to whether Mayweather should be considered lineal WW champion.

P4P is a much more subjective notion, have who you like as number one.

it depends on the nature of the wins really, although it's hard to compare the two when Floyd out-skills and out-smarts his opponent while Pacquiao just destorys them.

pacquiao has done too much to be pushed off the #1 spot. unless he loses or at least he struggled badly and won controversial decision against clottey plus a scenario where either floyd or mosley wins convincingly, pac will be holding the p4p#1 in a firm grip.

Pac won't lose to Clottey, so whatever Mayweather does, Pac stays #1.
