I think he would have done in the Olympics.

Apparently he did in 1992.

From Wikipedia.

Amateur
"Calzaghe, a southpaw, began boxing at age nine. In more than 12 amateur contests, he won four schoolboy ABA titles, followed by three consecutive senior British ABA titles (British Championships) between 1991 and 1993. This made him only the second boxer in history to win in welter, light-middleweight and middleweight divisions. He also beat future WBO and IBF world heavyweight champion Chris Byrd as a middleweight in 1992. He reportedly had an amateur record of 110-10. Calzaghe received his last defeats at the hands of Michael Smyth in the 1990 Welsh ABA final and Romanian amateur Adrian Opreda at the 1990 European Junior Championships in Prague."

Wiki doesn't lie.......

Yes, he basically embarrassed the guy according to some of those that saw the 'fight'.

Adalaide Byrd never forgot, evident by her horrific scorecard favouring Hopkins over Calzaghe.

Yes he stopped him I think, its not that impressive. Without speed as an advantage Byrd was pretty mediocre.

I wouldn't say it is the fight that sealed the deal, but it was definitely a step in the right direction towards Calzaghe becoming one of the amateur boxing legends. And although never making it to the games himself, his name can be pretty much mentioned alongside any Olympian in history when discussing the greats.

Without a speed, accuracy and power advantage Joe Louis was all but useless.

The fact is it is only when against a monster of an athelete such as Joe Calzaghe that Byrd did not posses a speed advantage.

Byrd: 290-25 (bulk of those losses coming early on in his development,) 1992 Olympic silver medalist.
