Default Malignaggi-Cotto; Any thoughts?

In anticipation to the Malignaggi-Khan fight, I'm starting to think Malignaggi is vastly underappreciated, and that although he's improved even at what one might consider the end game of his career, he's always been under good management. My grounds for stating this is the Cotto-Malignaggi fight. Yeah he was cut badly, and it was legitamite, but Cotto's performance in that fight was among the top echelon footwork and use of a jab I've seen bar-none. His footwork and accuracy, were only outpaced by Malignaggi, who as we all know is not known for hard shots, but I had that fight for Cotto at a slight margin, and Malignaggi's been working on strength lately.

That was Cotto's prime, and at his prime, before the Margarito (and some might say Clottey) debacle, his welterweight striking ability, especially at range, wasn't surpassed by anyone, certainly not Pacquiao or Mosley, both of whom are favorites of mine. The only person contemporarily comparable at that weight is PBFM unless I'm leaving someone out. I've considered Bradley (who comes damn close). Pavlik and PW throw lead sinkers, far more technical from Pavlik, which can't really be compared. If that fight did anything for most people, it just proved the chin of Malignaggi, and secured Cotto's status as a top ranked fighter. Does anyone have an idea for the future of this guy?

I know Malignaggi's known to be a talker, and isnt humble, and that won't win him populist fans, but when he fights seriously, which I've seen him do on several occaisions, he can be one of the more effective good boxer's out there. All said, I just like his style (even if he's clowning when he obviously should be hitting a worthy adversary like Diaz) I'd also like to see more of Khan if anyone's got a collection. From what I've seen, it's a match made in heaven, although Malignaggi is more agile and uses the extent of the ring more efficiently imo.

Malignaggi's claim to fame is surviving an absolute brutalization coming from Miguel Cotto. The man has talent, but no means is he a great fighter. He is simply a "good fighter". His punching power is often the butt of many jokes, but all jokes aside, his lack of power really is borderline pathetic. I understand he has bad hands or whatever, but come on...only 5 knockouts out of 27 wins?

I used to like Malignaggi, but I don't like his comments about Pacquiao. His thoughts seem to stem more from jealously and trying to get attention than anything else. He didn't say **** about steroids before the Cotto fight, but after his prediction fell flat, the accusations began to fly...he is a herb. I hope Khan knocks his ass out.

I hate Malinaggi. He is tough, but so are others. His trash talk is said to be act, but it's an act that sucks. He's annoying, and a piece of ****. He's looking to be announcer or commentator is my take on him, in meantime he's getting good money in fights he does not deserve.

That was Cotto's last fight at 140. Paulie was lucky he was fighting a terribly weight-drained fighter.

What's this?.... Some lame long winded rehash of how Malignaggi is a good fighter because he got worked by Cotto? A grossly EXAGGERATED version of Cotto no less. Good thread.

Malignaggi has proven his worth RECENTLY. Step into the now, FCS.

So we are in agreement then.

Hatton is better than Cotto because he decisively beat Malinaggi more than Cotto did. Right?

The Cotto around the time of Bailey/Sosa/Pinto fights would have absolutely trashed Malignaggi even more viciously than he got.

The beating Cotto gave to Pinto was brutal.
But props for Pinto for winning a round

As hated as he is for his talking he is still one of the toughest fighters in the game.

Having watched that fight, I think I've noticed Paulie has slowed down a little. His handspeed and footspeed especially don't seem to be on par as it was in the Cotto fight. Honestly, if he didn't get cut and dropped in the second round that fight could've been even closer. It was close but clear as is for Cotto.

Does anyone remember his the blood on his face and his swollen cheek at the end of that fight? And then the announcer saying, "Oh and Paulie can't wait to get out there for the 12th round. What a tough guy." Guy has done real well for himself considering his lack of power.

Sure, sure. Winning three world title fights with his lack of power speaks to something that compensates. He's tough and talented.

He gained my respect after that fight. Still that performance won't kill Malignaggi's career on here of being called gay or feather-fisted.

Just watched Pinto-Cotto. Helps you appreciate that Rome wasn't built in a day. Alot of fighters who came up around my time took easy fights to establish a record. To give you an idea how much boxing has changed from that fight to when I started following it (when was it? and at what weight?), the corners and announcers had me thinking for a moment Maldonado was going to let that continue. Good call, Cotto was going to commit murder otherwise. I'm not here to argue, I mentioned the Juan Diaz fight, and it's not that I exhaggerated Cottos ability, it's that he fought a terrific accurate fight.
